Still they are awfully sure of the breed for dogs that were gone by the time authorities got there.
I'm not a pit bull fan by any stretch of the imagination (their beady eyes creep me out) but it does seem like many people like call any vicious or scary-looking dog with short hair a pit bull. I think people have over-emphasized the breed, which distracts from the very real problem of vicious dogs of many breeds.

Sorry, @5, that "test" is deliberately misleading, and a distraction from the real issues.
Pit bull advocates have even created deceptive online tests (Find the Pit Bull) to further confuse the media, policymakers and the public. These tests are inaccurate and intentionally crafted to show that the average person could not correctly identify a pit bull. @14 Because dogsbite.org is an inherently more reliable and less biased source than breeders, of course. Now tell me how many people who are saying "it was a pit bull" have gone through that identification process on dogsbite.org? How many went through it before the dog attack, rather than afterwards? The memories of witnesses are notoriously open to manipulation.

Thanks for the extra two links, @16. And yes, for the average non-fighting-breed-owning, non-fighting-breed-defending person, who rationally wishes to avoid dog attacks to self and loved ones, dogsbite.org, a group concerned with minimizing attacks (a mission I would hope aligns with most fighting-breed-owning, fighting-breed-defending people) IS OBVIOUSLY a more reliable and less biased source than breeders.

Max, domestic goats are almost always d-horned. Because while they are sweet and lovable, they are stupid. Their typical thought process is: Can I eat it? No, can I jump on it? No, then HEAD BUTT IT! Even when just playing, a goat with horns can inflict serious or fatal injury to its owner.

@20 You are a fucking idiot. As are all of the people lumping American PitBull Terriers, Staffordshire Terriers, and American Bulldogs together. Let me explain why:
The reason they have a similar morphology is because they're descended from bulldogs, which is an incredibly old breed of dog that has always had a close relationship with people. If you look up paintings of bulldogs prior to the 1870s, you'll see a dog that looks almost exactly like a pit bull type dog. Because that's where the phenotype comes from.
The reason that most bulldogs do not look like this any longer is because they were crossed with pugs and selective breeding was geared towards a brachycephalic skull. Whatever evil impulses lurked in the origins of the terrier crossed pit bull type dogs would have had to come from this stock, since it's the only thing they have in common with American Bulldogs.
Except the brachycephalic bulldogs aren't popular with people looking for an aggressive dog. A different kind of dog owner buys the brachycephalic bulldog than the American Bulldog, which remains closer to the original phenotype.
Owners who want an aggressive dog have been led by people like you to believe the original bulldog phenotype is associated with aggression, so they get the dogs and, because they're the type of assholes who want aggressive dogs, sometimes manage to turn them into just that.

@14/20- I realize this is probably pointless since you cite dogsbite.org a well known biased, unfactual site (http://btoellner.typepad.com/kcdogblog/2…) but the two tests aren't even remotely comparable. The entire point of the Find the Pit Bull test is to show breeds COMMONLY MISTAKEN AS PITS along with a pit to illustrate that there are a number of breeds (cane corso, dogue de bordeau, etc). that are not pit bulls that people think are. The dogsbite.org test might as well have had toy poodles, chihuahuas and pug's and a pit. As 23 points out you're a fucking idiot

I've made my points, and I won't stoop to calling anyone a fucking idiot. But I will observe that the more you froth, the more you tend to discredit yourselves.
I'm always happy to see the friendly, well-behaved pitbulls and "dogs commonly mistaken as pits" when they come by my house with their responsible owners on the other end of a leash. I'm much less happy to see pitbulls and "dogs commonly mistaken as pits" running loose in my neighborhood—those PADCMAPs are often neglected, and their strength and persistence lets them scrabble over fences. I'm downright saddened to see that seemingly every adolescent boy in my extremely rural town sports a PADCMAP puppy on the end of a leash at some point, because a very high percentage of them are soon ignored when said adolescents get tired of walking them, or realize they can't tie them up in the city park while they skate and they can't work a video-game controller for shit. At least for the time being, there are enough soft-hearted spouses of doctors, lawyers, and bankers to take them in when they wind up at the pound.
I don't think breed-specific laws are the answer. I just want the goddamned FAD to be over.

@ 29: Sadly, our success in pushing responsible breeding is precisely why so many people wind up with pits. Pits and pit mixes are usually the only pups you can still pick up for free or nearly free so folks who can't afford to drop $500+ for a purebred (or, you know, even spaying and neutering of their new free dog) wind up with a pit mix. Some of us wind up taking in those dogs after they've been neglected and abandoned and get them spayed, etc. and then we face the same scorn discrimination as the folks who neglect and mistreat them because we must also be no-good fools to have such a dog.
