Only in Seattle

Posted by on Wed, Nov 16, 2011 at 3:30 PM

I just saw this on Facebook.

Only in Seattle: Guy found $2 on bus floor, asked everyone around if it was theirs. No one claimed it, so he put it back!

But before putting it back, he held a vote to see if he should put it back, but the voters wanted to have a committee meeting to see the way they should vote which needs a vote, too.

You sound like this is a problem somehow.

Since when does the Seattle stereotype include talking to strangers?

I think I did something even more "Seattle" today. I noticed a woman left her reading device and smartphone on the table at a cafe after she had already left. Instead of alerting staff, I stared at it for a while until eventually a staff member with a telephone was presumably talking to the woman and picked it up. I would have done the same had it been a wallet, puppy, or small child as well.

Only in Seattle: Pedestrians refuse to jaywalk. Even when there is no traffic in sight in either direction.

Which bus was it? If it was a Sound Transit commuter, well no one gives a rip about two bucks. If it was city Metro...

Never pick up or touch money off the floor of a Metro bus (or the Lusty Lady -RIP). Any savvy rider knows this.

@5--They do that in Germany, too. And scold you for doing otherwise.

Personally, I jaywalk (safely!) almost every day of my life in this city.

@5 don't worry, we uploaded video of you doing that.

The city has trained me well because, even though I witnessed this, I didn't pick the money up either.

@3 - He didn't actually ask with words. He pointed the money at passengers sitting directly next to the money who shook their heads.

@6 - It was metro.

It's nice to hear a tale of honesty.

@5 - Reluctance to jaywalk may be the single "only in..." that's actually accurate. I don't know if it's the work of a few overzealous officers (old Broadway cop whatsuuuuup!), or if the city actively reaffirms jaywalking enforcement, but I've never been to another city with quite the same bloodlust for that particular citation.

@6 Whatever, I picked up money off of the floor of a Metro bus and it turned out to be $185 bucks. So suck it, weakling.

We've had a dollar sitting on a lab bench in my department for at least a month. Nobody is willing to take it, because it might be someone else's. At this point it almost seems cursed.

I was heartened on Monday when a few of my high school students found $20 on the floor and turned it in. Asking my 170 kids on Tuesday if any had lost some money the day before, none reported so. The kids in 6th period voted to put it in the Coins for Cancer jar. So, not all is bad.

Well, I'm a Southerner, black too. So people would think I'd steal (being facetious here). Well one day I was walking home and saw an UW Staff ID Card that was by the bus stop. Since I had gone to UW and knew the system, I found the person's e-mail address via the staff directory, e-mailed them and notified them that I found their employee ID card. She e-mailed me back later that night happy of course and told me where to drop it off at, which just happened to be on my bike ride to Montlake. So yes. you can be courteous here in Seattle and return things to their rightful owner. Hell in college I was coming back upstairs from getting my laundry and saw a suspicious guy looking through cars. Upon returning to my on campus apartment, I called the cops and it turned out to be a plain clothes campus cop just canvassing the area.

@3 - We talk to strangers and we're very friendly with them... but we don't form lasting relationships.
