Maria Cantwell, One Percenter on a Mission

Posted by on Wed, Nov 16, 2011 at 6:00 AM

There aren't many U.S. Senators who have been more combative with Wall Street than Washington's Maria Cantwell.

Which makes the reminder in this study all the more interesting: Cantwell is the richest member of our state's Congressional delegation, worth something over $3.2 million.

I didn't know that. When did Cantwell introduce legislation to reinstate Glass-Stegall? And has she repeatedly lead the call for congressional investigations into the mega-banks and their role in the economic collapse

@1: She introduced legislation to reinstate Glass-Steagall in December 2009 and May 2010, among other times: http://cantwell.senate.gov/news/record.c…

I'm not sure Cantwell or any politician is aware of just how serious the economic situation is becoming for many, many Americans. In fact, I would like to see more of her and others at charities that are straining under the weight of the 99%.

she only has 3.2 million left?

I love our senators. They may not be showy or bombastic, but they sure seem to know what they're doing.

Jesus, we must have one of the poorest Congressional delegations in the country if Cantwell tops out at a mere $3.2 mil.

@7 - What, no tangentially related snipe at religion? Are you feeling okay today, Vince?

I thought this was about the top 1% of incomes, not wealth. Because of burning issues like income tax, or corporations that pay no taxes on their profits. Not so much corporations or individuals that have a lot of money sitting around.

If anything, it appears Cantwell continues to hemorrhage wealth since she went into public service.

Cato, I take it that you don't read Slog or know how to use Google. How disappointed you must be that you can't cynically snark at Senator Cantwell the same tiresome way you do everything else.

As for me personally, I've been a huge fan of the Senator since she took on the cause of Snohomish PUD and helped prove wrongdoing by Enron. She's dedicated.

@11, I just won't mention that she supported the Iraq war. Because I don't want to be snarky.

Cantwell burned through a good deal of her fortune in her first two election runs. She may now finally be at the point where she's built up enough political capital to raise real capital for her re-election bid next year. Otherwise, that $3.2 mil is going to drop again.

Cantwell is amazing, a tireless worker.
We're lucky to have her!
(And Patty Murray, too!)

Are you eternally out of your gaytarded, frigging mind, Sanders????

"There aren't many U.S. Senators who have been more combative with Wall Street than Washington's Maria Cantwell."

Have you EVER bothered to read her frigging voting record, douchbagging clownster?

Besides all that BS grandstanding eye candy she does on the congressional floor, such as the time she made a colossal fool out of herself, attempting to discredit Prof. Greenberger (who worked for Brooksley Born, remember her??????) where Greenberger SOUNDLY put the crooked Cantwell in her place, reminding her that she and the rest of the Senate and House had plenty of laws at their disposal to go after Wall Street on their derivatives/securitizations scams.

Of course, Cantwell should have solved everying herself, her being one of those financial super-geniuses. After all, wasn't she voted out of congress, took several years off to amass millions (once up a time referred to as being bought off and on someone's payroll) only to return to the Senate and once more sound like a complete and utterly ignorant douchebagger?

The same applies to Rahm Emanuel, who took a brief period to amass a fortune on Fifth Avenue at Wasserstein Perella (private equity firm); and Richard Holbrooke, a chronic non-achiever, who flunked the foreign service examination, the officers candidate school examination, and squeeked through college, unable to secure a job at any newspaper, eventually hired through family contacts with Dean Rusk at the State Department, where he had previously demonstrated he wasn't qualified for --- ONLY to spend a short time on Wall Street, also amassing multi-millions.

ALL financial super-geniuses, yet still unable to find their own genitals where finance and economics are concerned. HOW VERY FRIGGING CURIOUS???????

Cantwell voted:

YES on NAFTA,
YES on CAFTA,
YES on the Iraq War,
YES on subsequent war financing,
YES on doubling the foreign worker visa program,
NO on the public option for that so-called healthcare reform (both she and Murray voted down the Dorgan Amendment -- the ONLY public option offered on the Senate floor).

Will you colossal douchebaggers EVER frigging get your lazy pinheads from your butts and read your senators' voting records????

@3 Vince, please see my comment above:

"I'm not sure Cantwell or any politician is aware of just how serious the economic situation..."

The financial super-geniuses in the US Congress simply have no excuse on that regard.

Opposes linking Human Rights to trade with China

YES on free trade agreement with Oman

YES on free trade agreements with Korea, Columbia and Panama (which ships bulk of jobs not to South Korean, but to SLAVE LABOR CAMPS in North Korea, and utilizes the zero corporate income tax in Panama to benefit American-based multinationals and corporations and thus further destroy the American tax base)

I didn't get any data to support this, but I'm reasonably sure that 4 million in wealth puts here fairly solidly within the 99%. I would even dare to suggest that she's middle-class.

@14 - she used none of her personal money for 2006, and had raised close to $6 million over a year from her next election. So, what's your point?
