Are You a South Asian With Bone Marrow and a Heart?

Posted by on Wed, Nov 16, 2011 at 2:51 PM

This guy really needs your help. There's also a bone-marrow-swabbing drive tonight at Rob Roy from 6 to 10 p.m. (Apparently this was last night, sorry, go here.)

I'm South Asian and already joined the bone marrow registry. If I haven't been contacted – does that mean that I'm incompatible? Or should I try again?

I've done stem cell donations. No more than a minor inconvenience. And you get to watch a movie or read a book for the couple of hours it takes.

Is there some kind of blog or other website for hotel/motel managers? I'm completely serious... almost all the South Asians in my little town in the middle of nowhere are resident managers or close relatives thereof. The only others are practicing physicians (3).

...and I really need to submit the cheek-swab tissue-typing kit that's been floating around in my kitchen drawer for months. (Not South Asian, but plenty of people need help, too.)

Hi! The bone marrow swabbing drive was last night. BUT, you can still save a life or two by registering with a FREE kit from marrow.org.

And -- in recent news to me -- most marrow donation these days works in a process similar to plasma donation.

It also looks like there might still be a donor drive happening on the UW campus today if you hurry. Other drives are listed at http://amitguptaneedsyou.com/

@1 if you're registered you will be kept in the registry until you're 61 or you have donated twice, whichever comes first. If you're ever found to be a match you will be contacted as long as your contact info with the registry is current. No need to re-register.

By the way - you can also donate money to the bone marrow matching service. Typing the samples is not cheap, and for obvious reasons the people registering as possible donors usually aren't asked to pay for the privilege. So they rely on charitable donations to cover the costs of processing the samples, and also of running the organization.

Just a heads up white people: Two asian friends have mentioned to me in the last three weeks that they are getting really sick of white people telling them to get tested for bone marrow donation.

@9 glad to hear that the message is spreading! A lot of Asian friends are getting really sick of dying from not being able to find a suitable match in the registries.

@9,
Are these white people registered? There are lots of people of all ethnicities that need transplants, including a very dear friend (Caucasian) of mine DAMNIT! Currently there is no match for him in the registry.

Thanks for advertising. I actually registered 11 years ago, almost to the date. I couldn't remember if I had registered, but my parents just gave me a registry update letter that I probably would've ignored. This post jogged my memory and I updated today.
