Occupy PDX: Too Big to Jail

Posted by on Sun, Nov 13, 2011 at 8:37 AM

What happened when the Portland police chief and mayor gave the Occupiers an eviction notice, effective last night at midnight? Five thousand people showed up for a dance party. The Mercury reports on what happened next.

Note to mayors and police chiefs- the whole world is watching. Please, all of you, peace. And good luck out there. You're doing a stand up job!

Just put a fence around it, set up webcams and charge people to stream 'Lord of the Flies: Portland Fixie Edition'.

Just leave a gate for body collection. 4th OD there yesterday.

Except then everyone went out to breakfast and the police dismantled the camps? (In fairness, Portland's brunch options are irresistible.)

I think it's time for Occupiers to go home. They've made their point. Now it's time to move on.

@5: I was wondering that myself Ken. She's probaly referring to either the police chief or mayor of Portland.

Let me get this straight, Occupy Portland was brought down by fucking breakfast? By a grand slam?

I hope SCCC is taking notes. Maybe leave some strips of tofu bacon out overnight on Broadway leading up to Volunteer Park. When the potheads stagger out and follow the bait, move in and dismantle the camp and disinfect the area.

Interesting self-policing.
"Not wanting a crackdown on the entire group, the crowd then appears to have pushed Matta forward to police."

Thousands of people were there to say -- it's our park, it's our country, and we're not scared of the police. Or the damn terrorists. When there's that many people, they leave when they want to, not when a few cops on horseback order them to.

@2 - since the start of the occupation, several homeless people who would have OD'd and died alone, were instead saved because they OD'd surrounded by ordinary citizens. The media don't tell you about the lives saved by the Occupy movement.

@11 wow. What a spin! You could get high just thinking about your ability to defy reality.

the media doesn't tell you about homeless people, Erica, because no one really wants to hear about them, including ordinary citizens. If they try to camp in City parks, they are kicked out right away -- they don't get weeks of camping before removal, even though they are certainly part of the 99%. I'm glad a few were saved from death by OS people. Too many die. Women in Black are standing across from City Hall this Wednesday at noon for two more people who have died while homeless. You're free to join us.
