Shorter Seattle Times

Posted by on Thu, Nov 10, 2011 at 4:45 PM

The Seattle Times on Family and Education Levy: "WHEN it came to choosing the best investment for their dollars, Seattle voters smartly chose the Families and Education Levy."

The Seattle Times on I-1125: "Three cheers for voters for seeing through the nonsense of I-1125... Voters deserve considerable credit for reading the fine print."

The Seattle Times on $60 Car Tab Fee: "WHO said Seattle voters cannot smell a stinker when one is placed squarely in front of them?"

The Seattle Times on I-1183: "Now the people have voted yes, and by a decisive margin."

The Seattle Times on I-1163: "Two-thirds of voters are stupid fucking morons who don't know what the fuck they were doing. Fuck 'em!"

I wonder what the state budget would look like if every tax exemption required a 2/3 vote of the citizens to reauthorize it at every Presidential General Election?

My guess is ... surplus.

@3: Gosh, what a silly line of argument.

No, I don't support the initiative process at all. I think it's a stupid way to write legislation, and one that has been corrupted by money. Make me benevolent dictator for a day, and I'd do away with it (along with directly electing judges).

But, you know, I'm not benevolent dictator, and we have an initiative process, so I'd be stupid not in initiative contests simply out of principle.

imo, paid signature gatherers are also a bane, no matter the cause.

@ 9 I like paid signature gatherers these people are spending their time out there doing the work to get signatures, why not pay them for their labor.

@10: conversely if they support the cause, & know/care about whatever issue, why then is a monetary recompense based on # of signatures needed?
not against some sort of stipend, but really if something needs say 50,000 signatures and the gatherers have a quota...
it just smacks of the same basic crass commercializing of the process as citizens united, ya know.

@10: "these people are spending their time out there doing the work to get signatures, why not pay them for their labor."

I'd support them 100% if most weren't a front for chuggers, at least.

A friend of mine lives in Pittsburgh, a Goldy paradise. My friend pays state and CITY income tax and when he gets a new job he pays a $50 getting a new job tax. You'd think they'd have a surplus and not have bridges that are unsafe but no. They have a bloated legislature that's owned by untouchable public employee unions paying out unsustainable benefits. They keep losing population so at some point there will be no more "revenue sources". I saw that Harrisburg just filed for bankruptcy. Oh and they have no initiative process.

@ 11 I would still say yes, glad they support the cause but feel people should be paid for their work.

I dislike the initative process. For example, in an era where every 3 months, some ungodly amount of money gets cut from the state budget, here comes 1163 with no means to fund it. OFM says today that it would cost 18 million to implement 1163.

Washington voters don't consider how much initiatives would cost state taxpayers to implement, or the effect that it has on the overall budget. Even though there is federal funding that will offset the cost, it still leaves a pretty big chunk that the state has to pay.

And the way this state will choose to pay for it in our democratic legislature with our democratic govenor will be to do something like eliminate the state need grant for qualifying college students leaving them to borrow even more money then they do now.

My solution to fund 1163 would be say, a pop tax....

I saw this guy "Goldy" at work during election night. He reminded me of a weasel.
He likes to use four-letter words in his posts. I guess he thinks that gives him "cred" with Slog readers.
But when actually asking someone like Tim Eyman a question, there was this incredible sleaziness about "Goldy."
No substance to the questions, just hoping to catch Eyman in a gaffe.
Frankly, I don't know why Dan Savage keeps him around.
He's got plenty of other staffers who can dish out "fucks" and "shits."
It just made me cringe to watch "Goldy."
He reminded me of a ninth-grade nerd.
