From the "My Vote Doesn't Make a Difference" Department

tie.jpg

There are still plenty of ballots left to count in this Pierce County Fire Protection District #22 race, so one of these two candidates is still likely to pull ahead, however slightly. But at this point, both must be asking themselves what they could have done different? Knocked on just a few more doors? Showed up at just one more meet and greet? Placed a few more yard signs?

FYI, if after all the counts and recounts and ballot challenges the race remains tied, the winner will be chosen by lot, proving once again that for very pragmatic reasons our electoral system prefers finality over certainty.

Or maybe whoever does better at Oregon Trail or Number Munchers? Something to show they're actually superior.

I can't quite tell if you're saying this with approval or not. I'm guessing not. Which leads me to ask what you think they should do if they recount and recount and come up with a tie each time.

@4, or more to the point, what if they recount and recount and the totals change by 0.005% of the vote total each time, as they did (approximately) in Minnesota.

...Because if Egan gets it and McElligott doesn't, the house is gonna burn.

Sorry, but I'm with @2. Who gives a fuck? I've got bigger fish to fry.

If that's the McElligott with the Pool, he should totally win—what fire department wouldn't want an inexhaustible supply of water?

This isn't the first time this race was tied; it was also tied at 0-0, 1-1, and probably others as well; these are all just as statistically significant as the current tied count, which is nill.

The fate of the Pierce County Fire Protection District #22 hangs in the balance! Will the fire protection district be led to flame-retardant glory, or to flaming, leotardant shame? It may all come down to a coin toss!!!

@4: Always assuming the worst of me.

I wrote extensively on this subject in 2005 during Rossi's doomed court battle to overturn the 2004 gubernatorial election. Needless to say (except to you) our election statutes wisely prefer finality over certainty, otherwise every close election would end up in a revote.

Actually, make fun of fire protection districts all you want, but a minor drop in the district's PPC rating can cost you hundreds of dollars a year extra on your homeowners insurance, far more than you pay in property tax levy to maintain your fire district.

@10 we're all pussies. We should clearly settle this with swords. I got money on McElligott, since that sounds Scottish, and we all know from Braveheart that they're fearsome warriors.

@11 - It seems the people of Pierce County share my indifference. Either that, or they're bitterly divided on this vitally important issue.

@ 10, so it's Pro. That's okay - I like that too.

If you want not to be misunderstood, it helps if you're consistently logical. Work on that.

Matt from Denver, I usually like you but you have been super snarky and bitter lately. What's wrong? Would you like a hug?

We need a burn off.

And, if that ties, hoses at 100yards.

Probably it's 50-50 because voters simply flipped a coin when they were voting.

Seriously, why do we vote for positions like Fire Protection District Commissioner in this state? Not a fuck is given by anyone.

@ 15, why do you ask? Are you a Goldy groupie?

@18 No, not at all. Perhaps I'm imagining things but it seems like there's been a shift in tone of the comments around here lately.

Ah. Goldy's gotten on my last nerve with his superior bullshit, and it's apparent it's not just me. I'm the same loveable rapscallion elsewhere...

No, Goldy, your vote DOESN'T make a difference when millions of people vote for Obama to end the wars and he doesn't.

lf you read beyond the headline, you'll see that the US is NOT pulling out of Iraq. They're moving some troops outside the border and leaving tens of thousands of troops, "advisors", and military contractors still in Iraq.

And our vote DOESN'T count when millions of people reject the "Republican's" subservience to Corporate America and then Obama goes ahead and pushes the Wall Street bailouts, which so far have cost us $14 trillion.

Try again.
