Pitbull Fatally Shot While Minding Its Own Business

Posted by on Tue, Nov 8, 2011 at 3:41 PM

Just kidding, HA HA HA:

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 30-year-old woman was in her front yard with her boxer when a pitbull that had been wandering through the neighborhood came by and began attacking the boxer. The woman, her husband and others made numerous attempts to stop the attack using rocks and other yard implements to no avail. With the boxer bleeding and obviously injured and fearing his wife was about to be attacked by the pitbull, the woman’s husband retrieved a handgun and shot the pitbull once, fatally wounding it and ending its attack.

The boxer sustained serious injuries and was subsequently transported to an animal hospital by its owner (the woman). Animal Control officers responded to the scene and took custody of the pitbull.

Well, Cienna. Major reporting fail. I was just sitting on my living room floor minding my own business and two pitbulls ran over.and proceeded to lick my face (and one is a boxer mix). Nice try.

Licking your face clean before tearing it apart #1. Really give the beast some credit for wanting clean food. It's not about love, it's about lunch! Pass the kitten please.

@1 I'm . . . I'm just not sure what the point of that was. Did anyone then subsequently shoot your dogs? If so that is entirely tragic. If not I'm not really seeing how your "MYYYY pit bulls are harmless so that negates this article" really works out.

ricky--- the obvious point is that a stray, aggressive standard poodle attacking a dog or person isn't going to lead to as likely serious injury or worse as a dog such as a pit bull.

That's right, no wiggaz!

This really is the saddest common storyline on slog, and, as always, baiting. An animal that's been mistreated or poorly trained attacks; what a shock. Any way to block any post that has the word pitbull in it so I don't have to read these tired attempts at controversy? I come here to read about storylines that are interesting or matter.

@9 You're either joking or you just woke up an hour ago. Either way, here's a tip: the words 'HA HA HA' do not belong anywhere near a story that involves a dog being mauled and another one being shot to death.

I don't think it's fair to ask The Stranger to give up its top-notch Pit Bull bureau, but I do wish they'd roll all the stories into omnibus posts.

"Youth Pastor and Pit Bull Watch" has such a nice ring to it...

You realize there's no such breed as a "pit bull" and the "pit bull type" can actually include boxers, right? The dog that was attacked, the dog that didn't hurt anyone, could easily be labeled a "pit bull" itself by someone who doesn't understand dog breeds.

Like, oh, pretty much everybody who thinks "pit bull" is a distinct breed.

C'mon. Try to identify one:

I have taught my kids to avoid pit bulls because pit bulls sometimes just go off and kill whatever's handy, no matter how 'sweet' they will later tearfully be said to have been.

Here's a story two hours old: a three year old boy bitten on the head and face by the family pit bull ( http://www.kcra.com/r/29716573/detail.ht… ). The kid's brother opened the door and in comes old Smokey, straight for a toddler's face.

Curiously, searches for attacks by Labrador retrievers reveals only stories in which Labradors are among the victims of pit bull attacks.

They are a menace, and should be banned.

My partner works in animal control, as do a number of my friends. I hear plenty of stories of dog aggression and dog abuse directly from the front lines and *spoiler alert!* pit bulls aren't the only aggressive dogs out there, and there really is such a thing as a Bad Dog Owner. Of course you would never know either of these things from reading a typical newspaper article reporting on a dog attack and you certainly wouldn't know it from reading this blog. If any of you hacks gave one single shit about the hazards of dog ownership and dog violence you would be ashamed of yourselves for the way you flog these stories. It's not a fucking joke. I realize this is a real page-hitter for you guys, so I try to refrain from wading into the cesspool as a matter of principle, and also because I love dogs too much to remain calm and dispassionate. But here is the short version: you're. not. helping.

Here is the slightly longer version: When you perpetuate the myth that only one breed and one breed alone is responsible for all dog violence you also perpetuate the myth that dog violence is a very simple problem with a very simple solution. If you did a little needling around and spoke to an expert or two you would quickly find out that this is not the case. Have any of you ever spoken to a professional who works in the field? You should maybe try doing that sometime.

And yet somehow there aren't stories about poodles (a large breed, originally used as hunting dogs), or labs (another large breed, a hunting dog) or even beagles viciously attacking kids, breaking into random homes and attacking old people, or killing their families' kids. Why is that?

How about needing a license to own a pit bull, with proof that the owner has taken classes and the dog is trained? May sounds silly to some, but these dogs are dangerous when raised by lazy idiots. Read the story again. A group of people failed to stop the marauding pit bull using rocks and other objects. It took a gun to do the job. When these animals snap, it is difficult and dangerous to stop them.

Will I need to go out and buy a pit bull so I can protect my family from your pit bull?

Speaking as someone who actually WAS attacked by a dog (the family rottweiler bit me in the face when I was 3 and I still have a scar 22 years later), your and Savage's fixation on pit bulls as the end all and be all of animal attacks is incredibly irrational, unfair, and just plain stupid, and I shouldn't have to rehash the exact reasons why.

And what is the point of even adding your little pissy sarcasm on these stories? You can just write "SEE???!!" after each one and you've wasted a lot less of our time.
