It was so sweet. I was crying on my sofa. Thanks, Conan!

I wish someone had told me I was going to cry before I tried to watch it at work. I had to stop about halfway through and look at something else for a while.

What part of "Sob!" don't you understand?

Also, ha ha! Crybaby!

I'm looking forward to a day when same sex marriage isn't a novelty but even so this was totally precious and a really admirable attempt to push the United States in the right direction. Plus I want one of those crushed velvet jackets more than just about anything.

usually i cringe at the write-your-own-vows thing, but theirs were so sweet and genuine and not at all trite. so wonderful.

That was twelve sorts of awesome, with David's jacket accounting for at least three of those sorts.

@3 - I watched it well before you posted it. Where were you to protect me from myself? I trusted you, David!

Also, shut up! I wasn't crying, you were!

Yeah! That was so happy!
I love it that men, even gay men at their wedding, hug like they're tackling each other.

@4, @8 Maybe it's a novelty and pushes the envelope for television, but thousands of couples have already married under the law in New York, as well as Massachusetts, Iowa, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia. As such, Conan was just edumacatin' the unwashed masses, not breaking any new civil rights ground, although every little bit helps.

Now that DADT is gone, I'm still waiting for a military family to challenge DOMA in federal court. DOMA must die!

It is inconceivable that any one of the millions of anti-gay bigots out there could watch this and not recognize the true beauty and humanity of an event like this. Amazing.

That was so wonderfully sweet and sincere. The light in their eyes!

I do kind of wish Conan had been able to say "lover" or "fiance" or something rather than "partner".

I love how happy the audience are for them. It would have been so easy for some crazy christian to stand up and boo...but everyone is so supportive and wonderful. They even get a standing ovation at the end. I wish that every gay couple who choose to get married would get the same reaction.
Posted by Badger on November 4, 2011 at 12:39 PM
MacCrocodile 22
@19 - "Lover?" Really? Ick.

Anyway, it seems likely that "partner" is the term the couple used themselves. It also carries meaning that "fiance" does not. It was a beautiful wedding, but it was also a huge statement, and using the words that are usually used for stupid 19-year-old brides I feel would have trivialized the effort. "Partner" conveys the commitment and history they have together.

I wish that every gay couple who chose to get married could have it officiated by one of their bosses. Wait, no, I wish every gay couple could be married on a basic-cable talk show on a ratings-booster road show. Wait, no, I wish I had the nerve to center-part my own hair like that. Wait, no, I'm too teary to come up with more than three.

Exactly what I imagined a gay wedding to look like, Hollywood (NYC) style. Awesome. That jacket makes the gay lifestyle very appealing.

I'm sure they won't all be this flashy, but not all straight weddings feature a hottie princess either.

@31 taint-- Nope I have to politely disagree. @30 Will in Seattle can be lots of things but when he posts what he did he's showing his goodness and broader understanding of things. Yes I must be high or something because usually I can't stand him, but must give him credit where credit is due.

Conan is awesome!!!

My brother's wedding to his partner was equally poignant, though longer than this televised ceremony.
Seeing gay people get married makes me feel happy and hopeful about the world again.

your inability to conceive highlights a huge gulf.
because millions recognize this dog-and-pony show as incredibly heartbreakingly shallow and an empty mockery of what can be life's deepest richest experience.

@38 Oh? How many babies have you personally given birth to?

By the way, I'm sterile, and my wife and I knew it before we got married, and that wasn't any of the questions on the marriage license application.

Now, pay close attention, shithead. I realize this is a challenge to whatever limited candlepower your brain runs on, but you might just be able to comprehend this if you try: Straight people don't have to be willing or able to have babies in order to be able to marry. Therefore, if it's not a condition of so-called "traditional" marriage, it's not a reason for denying marriage to anyone. See? Now, go stick a fork in your argument. It's done.

Oh, and 40, Slog is a news and arts forum, with a decidedly left-wing, gay orientation, hence the large staff of gay people writing it. Why are you drawn to gay people? Again, I don't go to right wing Christian websites, and endlessly post about Christianity. Nobody obsesses about gayness so much unless they a personal stake in the matter. Why is homosexuality first and foremost on your mind?

@38 was addressed to @18 who said "It is INCONCEIVABLE that any one of the millions of anti-gay bigots out there could watch this and not recognize the true beauty and humanity of an event like this. ....."

see?

and the "conceive" remark was addressed to THAT.
