Holodeck, Here We Come!

Posted by on Wed, Nov 2, 2011 at 10:56 AM

This is a new crazy mash-up of augmented reality, pico projectors, and Kinect hacks. And you know it's serious science because of the narrator's accent.

Sure, maybe no single part of this demo will destroy your mind, but the cumulative possibilities here—especially the brilliance of using four separate Kinects to map a whole room in 3D—promise impending insanity. We know what you're thinking: immersive physics-based Japanese porn game, mixed with a Joy of Sex Rocksmith-style interactive humping primer. Yep. It's pretty much gonna happen.

Adapt this to glasses so I don't have to carry a flashlight around, and you've got yourself a deal.

This is more "Minority Report" than "Star Trek Holodeck", as there's no tactile feedback or physical interaction. Still cool though.

Sweet. I hope to see a holodeck in 10 to 20 years.

Oh my god! So so cool. Now if we just combine the cameras WITH the projecters, you'd have your interactive 3D holographic space. I know, I know: "processing power/memory/ heat." Still, a girl can dream.

This reminds me of an episode of News Radio from *The Future* where they went into a holographic room to riffle through some holographic files in a holographic filing cabinet. Do you guys remember that at all? It was low tech but pretty imaginative.
