Yesterday, Politico published a story about a sexual harassment suit from Herman Cain's past:

During Herman Cain’s tenure as the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, at least two female employees complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain, ultimately leaving their jobs at the trade group, multiple sources confirm to POLITICO.

The women complained of sexually suggestive behavior by Cain that made them angry and uncomfortable, the sources said, and they signed agreements with the restaurant group that gave them financial payouts to leave the association. The agreements also included language that bars the women from talking about their departures.

Mike Huckabee, who is clearly some kind of genius, says he could "almost guarantee" that this story was leaked by a rival Republican campaign. I find it amazing that Huckabee was a leading presidential contender in 2008, and he's never heard of opposition research. Meanwhile, Cain says he's been "falsely accused," and he says he never heard of any kind of settlement:

He added: “If the restaurant association did a settlement, I wasn’t even aware of it and I hope it wasn’t for much. If there was a settlement, it was handled by some of the other officers at the restaurant association.”

Cain said it’s possible that more sexual harassment allegations could be forthcoming, but that they would be baseless. “If more allegations come, I assure you, people will simply make them up. … The only other allegations will be trumped-up allegations. There is nothing else.”

Let's see how this goes. I don't think the Cain campaign is the kind of operation that can be sunk by something like this. The campaign is not based in reality, and the people who are supporting it don't much care about reality. It's like the rise of Sarah Palin in that way: Scandals will start flying in from everywhere, but the only thing that can sink this kind of crazy candidate is the candidate him- or herself.
