The Weather Outside Is Frightful: On the east coast, where 2.3 million customers were (and some still are) out of power.

Gun Club and County Duke it Out in Court: The Kitsap Rifle and Revolver Club is facing legal troubles from Kitsap County after stray bullets allegedly hit neighbors' homes. From the gun club's lawyer: "the county's desire [is] to take away the right of the club to exist as it has for 85 years."

Cain and Romney Lead in Iowa: According to a new Des Moines Register poll, which also includes a handy breakdown of what's changed in Iowa since June.

Flood in Thailand: Despite a massive governmental response in Bangkok, many Thai citizens are pretty much just going about their lives during a huge flood. Check out CNN's pictures; it's pretty humbling to see people trod through waist-deep water with their laundry and family.

Assad Says Syria Would Be Another Afghanistan: In an interview with a reporter from The Sunday Times.

Day in the Life: Of two downtown Seattle foot patrol officers, as profiled by the Seattle Times.

Halloween Is Tomorrow! So if you're lazy like me and don't have a costume yet, the Seattle PI has some easy suggestions.

Obama Claims Millionaire Support for Tax Increases: Obama says he has the support of millionaires to increase their taxes and fund his $447 billion jobs package.

Do Animals Grieve? Science says yes, though it's worth noting that the woman responsible for the study lives near/owns 28 cats.

"Healthier Halloween" This lady in Vancouver, WA offers healthy alternatives to candy during Halloween. However, she still offers candy, thus avoiding the ire of anyone who was ever 9.

Two of my favorite things in one video: Take 6 on Sesame Street, singing about the number 6.

Animals do feel emotions. When our cat died, our youngest Dachshund, who was friendly with the cat, was distraught. And when Mr. Vel-DuRay's mother died, her golden retriever wouldn't eat, and wouldn't play. He wasted away and had to be put down.

Can someone remember to bookmark the first article for later reference this winter when we get socked with a massive (for us) snowfall and everyone starts complaining about how ineffectual local government services are, because they didn't instantly remove all the show and restore power, so they could get to their shitty administrative job that normally they'd look for any excuse to duck out of in the first place?

When elephants die, others close to them show obvious signs of distress, and often return repeatedly over the next few years to touch the bones of the deceased.

Assad can't bluster anyone. The world knows what he is. It will be a bullet from one of his own that will put him down like the son of a dog he is.

My favorite bit in this morning's news is a NYT magazine story on Lynda Barry, who is impossible not to love:

Assad gave his spiel to the Torygraph, not the Times. the Times is behind Rupe's paywall, anyway.

Israel will regret their one for a thousand prisoner swap. Now the Saudis are placing bounties on Israeli soldiers. And Israelis are placing shoot to kill bounties on freed prisoners. Is this ever going to end?
