Aw, sweet. If I predecease my own sister she'll have to read context into whatever last words may escape my lips: "OH WOW (there's barbs on the tip of the Devil's hardon)."

As long as they don't make you ovulate, Gus, I think you'll be all right.

Christopher, thanks for posting that. My brother, who is usually only dimly aware of such things, just gave me the Isaacson biography of Jobs. Mona Simpson's farewell to her brother was quite wonderfully crafted, with a novelist's attention to detail and time. I think we'll be hearing good things about his family members as time goes on. His children in particular have a heavy burden of expectations and the challenge of living gracefully with nearly limitless wealth, but they seem to have been well grounded by their parents, and Ms. Simpson gave us little glimpses of a life that seemed more focused on at least a core of simplicity rather than an upward spiral of consumption.

Isaacson's book includes a picture of Jobs in his nearly empty Cupertino living room 1982 (with only a Tiffany floor lamp, a stereo system, and a small square of carpet on which he sat like the Buddha), with the surprising explanation in the caption that Jobs's perfectionism made it difficult for him to buy furniture.

@5

Read "Anywhere but Here."

Mona Simpson's early life was explicitly focused on a spiral of consumption rather than a core of simplicity. That changed over time, clearly, but so did her social status. I would gently suggest that the relation between economic status and personal aspiration might be quite the opposite of what you've implied in your comment.

@6: I'm confused. You are aware that Simpson and Jobs grew up in completely different families, aren't you?

Don't be confused, I'm very, very aware.

But did you read the Anywhere But Here? You know, the book where Mona Simpson describes her feelings and aspirations as a child?

"oh wow, oh wow, oh wow". I wonder if he was on a morphine drop because dying cancer patients are usually out of it as they should be in their final hours. But I wonder if he was planning his next product. the "iResurrect" or will it be "iReincarnate"?

Actual last words...

I see a light.

A bright white light.

Every thing is so bright and shiny...like...uh, brushed aluminum.

Yes, Heaven is like shiny white plastic and brushed aluminum...

Wait. Shit. Not Heaven.

When do we start building places to worship Steve Jobs? Also, when can we lobby congress to have the phrase "In Steve Jobs We Trust" on all of our currency?

Live this life correctly and passing into the next reality is probably a big ecstatic rush....as in "O WOW, O WOW, O WOW....Perhaps Steve was experiencing this reality fully....I hope that my time is similar...

At least he got to experience death on his terms (sort of, minus the shitty cancer part). We should all be so lucky.

"His way to achieve catharsis is to hurt somebody. And I think he feels he has a liberty and a license to do that. The normal rules of social engagement, he feels, don't apply to him. Because of how very sensitive he is, he knows exactly how to efficiently and effectively hurt someone. And he does do that" -- Jonathan Ive on Steve Jobs.

So spiritual.
