Cardinals Win World Series

Posted by on Fri, Oct 28, 2011 at 8:31 PM

Apparently, there was an important baseball game or something tonight, and the team from Texas lost. I never root for teams from Texas, so I suppose that's good.

Speaking of which, remember when we were told that a spiffy new taxpayer-funded stadium was all that was needed to take the Mariners to the next level and over the hump? Ah, the follies of youth.

The Texas team used to be owned by Dubya, AND he was sitting front row for the games in Texas.

Was that the one we voted against repeatedly and the city and state ignored and overruled us on? Or was that the football stadium? They all blur together now.

The team from Texas is George W. Bush's team, so it's doubly good that they lost.

Tony LaRussa is pretty creepy, but he's already won a World Series or two, so it's not that big a deal to keep him from the trophy.

The Rangers have lost two Series now, which is more than we have ever done. The Mariners and Nationals (nee Expos) are the only teams that have never even been to one. Only Texas, us, Expos, and Brewers have never won. Futility is our bag.

Nope. The Rockies have never won.

Crap. That's five. But you've been. And you've only been around, what, two or three years.

It's not an honor to be the last guy left in the room with the Nationals.

The Astros (nee Colt .45s) have been to one Series, but also have never won.

Also, the Padres and Rays have never won the World Series.

The happiest man in America tonight is the Cardinals fan who put $250 down on the Cards to win the World Series on September 12 at 999 to 1 odds.

The Mariners should see if they can get Bill Neukom. Wasn't there something about them having money problems? Anyway, Neukom is a former Microsoft lawyer who became managing general partner (or some such title) of the SF Giants. He got a lot of credit for their success last year. This year the board forced him out, apparently because they didn't think he reported to them enough.

I thought Safeco Field was to keep the Mariners, period. I don't remember promises of winning seasons...

Too bad the Legislature couldn't show as much gumption to figure out the budget as they did with Safeco Field. Nobody lost their seat because of that vote...

For myself, I really don't like Safeco Field at all...I know they were going for a retro look...but to me Seattle is more the Jet Age futuristic (not nostalgic) style. The Kingdome said it all and I wish it still was The Stadium.

In Chicago, they are TheHatedCardinals.
This only gives me another reason to dislike Texas.

Not sure about Safeco but I DO remember being told that if we built the new football stadium that we'd be able to host a Superbowl. And a year or so after it was finished the NFL said no Superbowls in the north unless it's an indoor stadium. HAHAHA!! Hillarious!!!

Remember when the Phillies rotation was supposed to take them to (and keep them at) the next level? Now they've declined to pick up Oswalt's option. Poor, poor Philadelphia...

@19: Apparently NJ is not the north, then? Meadowlands in 2014. Bring your parka.

Well SafeCo is a shinny plaything that draws decent attendance no matter how bad the product on the filed is. Keeping in mind that QwestLink before the Sounders only had 12 guaranteed events per year (8 regular, 2 pre.) how many businesses would be collecting sales tax for the city without Safeco? Would Elyssian Field's be there without the Mariners? Would the Silver Cloud be there? (Haurmph, taxes. What, there are jobs created by building a stadium? Harumph, taxes.)

@ 19, did they really say that? I arrived in Seattle just weeks before the stadium vote, too late to register to vote against it. I had no TV at the time, and no internet yet, so I wasn't exposed to the sales pitches. All I remember was that it was supposed to keep the Seahawks in town, and it did do that.

Or maybe you were going way back and talking about the Kingdome? I used to wonder why Seattle never got to host a Super Bowl when they did have an indoor stadium. I know the place had absolutely no amenities, but I don't think the Louisiana Superdome or the Pontiac Silverdome did, either, at least in the 70s and 80s...

"Shinny?" No, wait, seriously, "shinny?" Go away.

The cities that host Super Bowls cater to male conventioneers the rest of the year and are known to provide a certain level and type of entertainment to them. Seattle can't even tolerate a strip club two blocks from a stadium, let alone allow major avenues become prostitution tracks. Conventioneers and Super Bowl attendees don't have to go to trouble of reading the back section of an alternative weekly to get under age hookers in Atlanta or Dallas or Phoenix.
