#OccupyOlympia (1933 Edition)

Posted by on Thu, Oct 27, 2011 at 4:32 PM

What Gov. Gregoire is essentially asking for has plenty of precedent.

On January 16, 1933, people converged on Olympia for a Hunger March to demand food, shelter, relief and programs to create jobs for the unemployed throughout the state.
  • Vibert Jeffers, Susan Parish Photograph Collection, Washington State Archives, used with permission.
  • "On January 16, 1933, people converged on Olympia for a 'Hunger March' to demand food, shelter, relief and programs to create jobs for the unemployed throughout the state."

This year's special session—convened to cut $2 billion more from a budget that's already been cut by $10 billion over three years—is set to begin on Nov. 28.

as a conservative (i know boo and hiss) I have absolutely no problem what soever with them closing tax loopholes, but I do not like the idea of more taxes on the upper middle class.

The poor, the elderly, the ill, the unemployed, and our youth are really going to suffer even more than they already have.
We simply must band together to help them out as best we possibly can. I don't know what other choice we have.
Our leaders have let us down, true -- but we all have to shift our behavior now, look up and into one another's faces, and help.

People got to thinking that history is teleological and has an end point, that progress can't be reversed. They forgot not that not only do you have to fight for every inch of progress, you have to also fight to defend it. It's a continuous struggle. It's when you think you've won that you lose the most ground. I'm hoping that the age of apathy is over.

And what a success that occupation was - unemployment remained in the high teens until the late 30's.

Hey, it's almost like this dumb bitch dramatically increased the size of government when she was first elected and gave collective bargaining rights to public unions who in turn demanded huge, unsustainable raises. Wow, who could have foreseen that the good times would end? Where are the pension reforms for public employees? Does the whole state have to be threatened with bankruptcy before we'll see that?

You girls are ignoring a huge Inconvenient Truth.
The system works just fine.
The people of Washington State are getting exactly what they want.
And that is what our representative government is supposed to do.

This is not a Secular Humanist Theocracy where a High Priestess Governor hands down decrees that create a Socialist Utopia.

Sorry.

You are angry because the people who actually pay taxes are sick of funding your socialist dreams for you.

They have expressed their will clearly.

Deal with it.......
