The Nordic Heritage Museum in Ballard is a universe all its own, chock full of artifacts set in dusty but theatrical historical dioramas in order to tell the story of Nordic people in Seattle—people at church, at the barbershop, in the kitchen, at the hospital (one diorama is early Swedish Hospital, replete with mannequin nurse).
If you've never traveled to this alternate universe, I cannot recommend more strongly that you do so now. The Nordic Fashion Biennale is on, this is its first time in Seattle, and it's wild. Fashions from the leading designers across the Nordic nations are displayed in gallery rooms like art objects, but then, they're also interspersed in the historical dioramas, creating a crazy mishmash of periods.
Read all about it in Marti Jonjak's Worn Out column this week, which comes complete with a full slide show of fashions from Kelly O.
