Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father

Posted by on Tue, Oct 18, 2011 at 10:17 AM

A California father convicted of holding his son in a hot oven to teach him a lesson was sentenced Friday to one year in jail. Gregory Colver Jr., 21, originally maintained he had been asleep while his 17-month-old child wandered into the kitchen, turned the oven on and climbed inside, hurting himself. The boy suffered second- and third-degree burns... However investigators poked deeper into the story when Colver's account didn't match up with his girlfriend's, the child's mother, who was at work when the incident happened. Colver, arrested on Dec. 30, ended up confessing to police that he had held the child in the oven purposefully to teach him the dangers of a hot oven.

UPDATE: Forgive me for feeding the troll:

The parents aren't married. They never are in "Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father." The common theme is not heterosexuality. It is that shacking up is brutal on the children involved.

Now he'll be held in jail and will learn the dangers of jail. Seems fair.

To teach my toddlers of the dangers of a hot oven, I make them stand back out of the kitchen while I'm opening it and telling them that the oven is hot.

Have I been doing it wrong all these years?

Oh, and BTW, SLOG, can we please not have any more horrors-against-children stories today? I'm still reeling over the video of the Chinese toddler.

Damn. How do you teach a child about the dangers of a blender?

@11 - Or the dangers of juggling knives, armed robbery, rabid animals, falling from great heights, cleaning a loaded gun, et cetera. This child's upbringing could take a while.

This article from today's BBC discusses why the US leads the Western nations in child abuse and fatality. If you want to get really pissed off it is a must read.

O.M.F.G.....

Nine dysfunctional married couples?

NINE?!

Filthy hungry puppies?

sick.......

Danny, have Dr Dr Golob explain anecdotal bullshit to you.

But here's some homework to get you started on the path to enlightened clueness:

Go through all the "Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father"s from the past year.
Count how many of the couples are unmarried.

(hint- It's 94%.....)

Dr Dr Golob could tell you that the SCIENCE shows that children in households with unmarried caregivers are at much greater risk than children in households with married parents.

Thanks for playing Slog.

So one guy gets an extra 5 years for using a cell phone, and this POS gets 1 year for burning his child on purpose. Never ceases to amaze me...

@10 - My brother was adopted out of FL's foster care system after being removed from the custody of his married mother & father. His father broke his arm, made him watch as his mother turned tricks to earn money for drugs, broke his nose, & beat him with a hose for such agregious acts as spilling milk or dropping a piece of pizza on the floor. When the police came to remove the 4 kids, his father used him as a human shield while holding a gun to his head & threatening to kill him if police came any closer. He was about 10 years old. After languishing in FL's foster care system, he was excited about the chance to reunite with his mother. However after her husband (his dad) went to prison for the child abuse she hooked up with a felon. The Court said she could have Felony Boyfriend or the kids, but not both. She chose Felony Boyfriend, much to the dismay of her (at this point) 12 year old son.

And with the greatest sincerity, I'll quote from your idol...

"Thus far I find you rather detestable, may I say that without hurting your feelings?"

Well, yes. That's why you shouldn't fornicate with children, or commit adultery with them.

Dan, stop giving the troll the time of day, he / she is a fucking idiot. Your point is understood by people who can think. The country appears to be coming around to the fact that marriage is for all loving couples, it's just the politicians and the fucktards (e.g. the resident troll) that don't get it. I appreciate all your efforts, keep up the good work, love you man! Remember the people without hearts need our pity but not our attention.

@24 - actually, stats don't bear that out. Child fatalities due to parental abuse or neglect are three times what they are in Canada, and ELEVEN times what they are in Italy, for instance. As the BBC article cited above points out, a large part of the reason for this is a complete lack of social safety net in many cases - too-young parents with absolutely nowhere to go to learn parenting, get relief, get counseling, etc. And the first place we make cuts is generally in social services.

People who don't intend to become parents and who aren't financially able to deal with it and who haven't been able to grow up themselves and who don't have parental training are more likely to be bad parents.

Which is why we need sex ed, access to abortion, cheap and accessible birth control, incredible financial and medical support for pregnant women, incredible adoption programs, free day care, incredible parental leave laws, good education, and support for all couples who have the desire and resources to raise children well.

Danny, while you were out scouring the nets for bad married couples did you notice this:?

Cheerleader To Remain Off Squad Statement released by AHS Principal Lucy Munoz at 3 p.m. Monday: [OCTOBER 17]

The Alice I.S.D. has recently reviewed the recent removal of a student from the Alice High School Cheerleading Squad. After reviewing the Alice I.S.D. Student Code of Conduct and the Cheer Program Handbook, the removal will stay in effect. The student’s parents are in agreement with the district’s decision.

The student code of conduct and cheer handbook are designed to improve conduct and encourage students to adhere to their responsibilities as members of the school community. THE STUDENT AND PARENTS ARE CLEARLY AWARE THAT THE STUDENT WAS NOT REMOVED FROM THE SQUAD FOR KISSING ANOTHER STUDENT AT SCHOOL......

Have you been punked again, Danny?
Is the "kissing cheerleader scandal" the Bigotry That NEVER Happened?

Is ANYTHING you ever post not 100% Bullshit LIES?
