Another Kind of Geek Girl Con

Posted by on Tue, Oct 18, 2011 at 1:09 PM

Are you in the tech industry? Do you identify as female? Are you aware of ++XX?

From their website:

++XX is a group for women in technology – developers, designers, user experience, social media, technical writers, startup founders / entrepreneurs, etc. It’s open to ladies of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of skill – students, professionals, experts, complete novices, and everything in between.

++XX is a coworking event that meets 4 times a month. It’s a friendly meetup where we work on projects, ask or answer questions, and share skills. It’s not a formal networking event. However, other local networking and technology events of interest are emailed via our mailing list and posted under “other events”.

Their next meet-up is this Thursday! Check it out, ladies!

What if you're female, but not a lady?

It always kind of bums me that these things seem much more geared toward the designer types, and leave the operations people - the mechanics, as it were - out. There ARE female systems engineers out there, too, not just developers and designers and program managers.

@Geni: as a designer, my impression was the opposite. I am interested in checking out the group for sure. However, what interests me most is the prospect of meeting other folks in the industry that don't do the exact same thing I do.

@3&4 Yes yes yes. It drives me crazy when people use the label "tech industry" or "high tech" to solely refer to computer related professions. Female engineers, mechanics, welders, operators, etc continue to be invisible. Well we may not be chic and kewl but we keep shit running.
