NYC Cop Slugs a Protester

Posted by on Mon, Oct 17, 2011 at 10:00 AM

Are they're intentionally inciting violence to make peaceful demonstrations/demonstrators look violent and scary? (You know Fox will edit out the punch and just run the chaotic aftermath.) Or is the NYPD secretly working with OWS? After all, every time a cop does something like this, the protests grow larger. (Via Sullivan.)

That was a woman he slugged, wasn't it? NYPD sure does like to beat up women.

She was probably dressed too provocatively and he just couldn't help himself...

WTF was that? Even if justified to use force (Of which there is no evidence) tactically you don't strike with your fists. That is sure sign that the cop is out of control. It's a good way to escalate the situation. Your telling me that New York has never had to handle crowd control before?

I could be wrong, but I *think* this is the same punch that you mentioned last week, where the victim was HIV positive. But this is a much better video of it than some of the others I've seen.

On the positive side today:

http://www.fbi.gov/newyork/press-release…

A criminal complaint was unsealed this morning in federal court in Brooklyn charging New York City Police Department Officer Michael Daragjati, an eight-year veteran of the NYPD, with violating the civil rights of an African-American victim by willfully arresting him and charging him with a crime without probable cause and on false pretenses, and for doing so based on racial animus. Daragjati is also charged with attempting and conspiring to commit violent extortion and committing wire fraud by making false statements to an auto insurance company.* Daragjati was arrested this morning and has an initial appearance scheduled later this afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Joan M. Azrack at the U.S. Courthouse, 225 Cadman Plaza East, Brooklyn, New York.

I lived in NYC for a long time, and that is shocking. The police have obviously been told they can do whatever they want.

Watching the first reports where the penned women were maced, that was my first thought then, and I remain convinced they're trying to incite the protesters to riot so they can just come in and remove the lot. So far this hasn't worked...

Is it my imagination, or is every single incident of police brutality in NYC committed by a white shirt?

@6, I'm starting to think that the seemingly exaggerated screams are to alert the other protesters that police brutality has occured.

The white shirt thing is interesting (and no, it's not your imagination). Check this out: http://crooksandliars.com/susie-madrak/w…

The OWS protestors commitment to nonviolence has been exemplary. I dearly hope all the people who have been victims of police brutality are filing complaints and speaking with lawyers. It will take a damn long while, but eventually all these incidents will work their way through the courts, the cost of being fascist will come due, and NYC will remember just how much it costs to let your police force believe it’s above the law. There will be a reckoning for this, goddamnit.
