Someone help me out here: "mummery"? As in, like a mummy, or is it a reference to mummers?

Really? Mummies, burlesque.. this is about an economic structure that has left millions of people without work, with no way to pay bills, with limited access to health and wellness. The best we can do is prance around in costumes? C'mon Seattle! This is serious sh$t.

Been watching a few of the facebook pages & forums, I hate to say it but they need some Type-A personalities. I recognize this is easy to say as an outsider looking in.

What @2 said. Sounds like a street festival. Will they be selling deep fried twinkies?

Here is schedule on Occupy Seattle website.
Apologies for the confusion, here is the OFFICIAL schedule for Saturday, the Global Day of Action:

12pm - Global Day of Action Rally
3pm - March to Chase Bank
5pm - Tent-Raising Ceremony

Um, what? They do realize that the Chase at 5th and Union is just a branch, right? Not the HQ... just a bunch of 99%-ers trying to make a living at a bank branch. The rest of this schedule is a mess. Too much overlap and nothing is clear. And zombies? What? It's at least supposed to be sunny tomorrow, so maybe that will make turnout better than last week's disaster, but still... none of this is encouraging me to go to Westlake. If anything it's encouraging me to stay way the fuck away.

The great thing about the WTO protests was that the left learned so much about how the American television audience reacts to costumes, giant puppets, and street theater in a protest ostensibly addressing very serious economic issues.

I'm not sure I like a schedule. This is all becoming "normal", #OccupySeattle has been something very different than anything else at least to now. I'm not sure I want that to change.

This schedule could not make Occupy Seattle look anymore like a total joke. Zombies? Have fun not making a difference...

@14 - Occupy Seattle has been very different from everything else... except every Direct Action undertaken from the anti-WTO protests to the present.

Sure, most of them were in other countries, but the whole package has been deployed many times, from the "general assembly" decision-making system to the absurdist elements to the general focus on economic equality.

Here's activist David Graeber explaining what it is and how it works and where it's already happened, in 2002:

@17 That's very interesting, madcap. I haven't heard that one. Lazy students don't want to pay for their college degrees and that's why they're protesting? Did you get that from FOX or did you come up with it yourself?

@19 That's what it says at the top of the schedule. I'm kinda confused about the "forgive student loan debt" mention too. What's the explanation behind that one?

Is this schedule a joke?! Well, okay then. Beyond the mummery and zombies crap, I'm glad to see the Global Day of Action includes "Forgive Student Loan Debt." Or more realistically, how about just: Please Lower Our Damn Interest Rates?

As a mid-career professional who recently received a master’s degree, I find myself competing with hundreds of other equally qualified applicants with advanced degrees for the same jobs in the non-profit sector. I, too, face paying back Sisyphean student loans to the Feds after the six-month grace period is over. My previous savings were exhausted by: 1) offsetting cost-of-living expenses as a student; 2) paying off the accrued interest for my unsubsidized loan (which kick in on day one of going back to school); and 3) paying dental and medical bills beyond the deductible set for student insurance (for which I also paid for).

I currently make ends meet through a part-time, low-wage hourly job without benefits which, due to a cocktail of State defunding and budgetary cuts, has a looming end date of right before Christmas and ringing in the New Year. On the slippery slope of month-to-month living, I’m grateful for food stamps and the possibility of relying on other social services – the ones I paid into when I actually had a professional career.

Do I see myself in these protestors? Or do I see myself just getting lost in a crowd?

Right now I’m occupied with sitting in waiting lines, mailing out resumes, working part-time, and volunteering in my community for organizations that matter. You know, just trying to “keep hope alive” because sometimes it seems that that’s all I’ve really got left to look forward to. The irony doesn’t escape me now… that Obama via Jesse Jackson campaign zinger wasn’t just speaking to me, it was speaking beyond me. Especially in light of unemployment rates for, say, African American males, those laid off before retirement who can’t find a job because they’re seen as a benefits liability rather than a skill sets asset, or the poor who care for the sick or disabled in their families.

This is merely a small taste of the struggle over what it means to meet one’s basic needs; what so many others in this country have been coping with as they try to feed themselves and their families, trying to stay healthy, while keeping a roof under their head. For a significant part of underemployed and unemployed America things have been like this for years.

Again, zombies, mummery, and burlesque?! Maybe I should I should lighten up, but, you know, my life isn't kooky zany fun. If Occupy Seattle actually intends to be taken seriously, it’s time the protest moves beyond a sideshow and begins to speak in a coherent voice for us all.

I'm planning on picketing the Jackson Federal Building tomorrow at 915 2nd Avenue. That's the home of the U.S. Dept of Education's regional office which is responsible for administering FAFSA. It's also the site of where this whole Occupy Seattle movement began on September 26th. It's a public space and, just like what drew me to the protest on that first day when this whole thing kicked off, I've still got the right and the right reason to be there.

@21 - Debt forgiveness in general is the current lefty-radical flavor of the month. Most likely on account of how David Graeber revives the idea in his recent book, Debt: The First 5000 Years.

There have been some OWS calls for mortgage debt forgiveness before this; Student Loan forgiveness unfortunately looks a little more like either pandering or naked self-interest, depending on who was in the crowd when that emerged from the day's legislative session.

Here's an idea, lefty weirdos.

Work hard at whatever you do. Show up on time with a good attitude and show some intitiative in making your work more efficient or customer friendly or some way improved. If what you do isn't to your taste, take classes at a local college or trades school, on your own time.

Don't have kids you can't afford, or a car or a house or a vacation you can't afford either. If you do, suck it up. Work 2 jobs if you must to meet your obligations. One of those jobs cleaning toilets or sweeping floors? Too bloody bad. You made the decisions that put you where that was necessary.

Can't find work? Change your expectations about pay or benefits or what is or isn't 'beneath' you. Move if you must. You aren't the only person looking for work so you'd better figure out a strategy. At any rate, it isn't my problem to find you a job. It isn't the president's, or the congress' or the governor's. It absolutely isn't the prospective employers. It is yours. Yours alone.

You may have to shamefacedely realize that the world has enough MBAs. It has enough lit majors, and philosophy majors. You may have wasted tens of thousands of dollars on a financially useless college degree. So what? How does this impose an obligation on any other living human being? Pay your damn student loans, deadbeat.

You may have to adjust your lifestyle to your current economic conditions. Better people than you have done it. It isn't shameful to do so. Rather, it's shameful not to.

After a year or two of actually acting like an adult (leftists, look up terms like 'mature' or 'responsible' in a dictionary, but keep some restorative handy for your shock at the concepts), if 'Wall Street' still seems whom to blame for your poor decision making get back to me.

Until then, shut up until you grow up.

@36 - Yes, and the organizers use the word knowing its full meaning.

There is an intentional, tactical element of absurdism embraced by the core organizers of OWS, in the service of a very specific political theory. The terms "Direct Action" and "Day of Action" (the latter usually preceded with "International") come from that political ideology as well, and have very specific meanings within it.

It's referred to variously as "New Anarchism" or "The Global Justice Movement" or sometimes simply as "Anarchism".

A short (though academically worded) explanation of the core ideas can be found here:
