A Man Named Andrew Meyer Is Going to Make Amends on Behalf of All the Good Andrew Meyers Out There

Posted by on Wed, Oct 12, 2011 at 1:26 PM

He writes to The Stranger:

Hi there,

Having been recently alerted to the Victoria Liss story on your website [here and here], I cannot stand by and have my good name tarnished.

As an Andrew Meyer who lives nowhere near the scene of the crime (I live in Fountain Valley, California), I am outraged by this situation.

I would like to cover for the trouble that poor Victoria has had to go through on behalf of someone who should be ashamed of himself on so many levels.

As a result, I'd like to send a 100% tip from the cost of the meal to Victoria. I will send $28.98 to her if you can arrange for that to happen.

Please contact me via e-mail or at [redacted].

My "name" can't be shamed anymore. It was bad enough when this guy tried his part.

I can stand my ground no more.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Andrew Meyer

Hilarious. Well played. We are putting Andrew from California in touch with Victoria.

I still think Dan Savage escalating this on this august forum was inappropriate, classless, and disappointing. I think something more than a strikethrough and "update" is called for.

I mean all the Andrew Meyers I know are jerks, but it's a common enough name - widespread online bullying was not unforeseeable. Be a mensch, Mr Savage.

So now we're rewarding her for freaking out and causing the wrong guy(s) to be harassed?

I get where the guy is coming from, but honestly - I don't think Victoria deserves a reward for starting a witchhunt against the wrong guy. Better if this Andrew Meyer would make a donation in her name - perhaps to the Anti-Defamation league?

Great. It's always nice with some mentally ill bar tender has her stupid public behavior vindicated. And yes, publicly shaming someone and unleashing an online mob against them and anyone with their name based on an unverified, probably exaggerated, account is mentally ill behavior. Or if not that, calculatingly vile.

No. She fucked up royally here and has not shown any grace or real remorse in the aftermath. Don't reward her for being such a careless jackass.

@ 6, that's not true. She pulled the post identifying the guy and apologized on her FB page. That may not be enough (I have no idea if she actually contacted the wrong guy to say she's sorry, which she needs to do), but it's still the opposite of "not showing any grace or real remorse in the aftermath."

i suppose there wasn't any "real" harm done but it was still ridiculously irresponsible. and that FB post about "coming down to the cha-cha and tipping 20%!" was tasteless in my opinion.

i don't think we need to carry this further either, and that includes thinking she shouldn't be getting rewarded for anything.

Ugh. I was so much more sympathetic before half the internet decided to dog-pile on some guy who TURNED OUT TO BE THE WRONG PERSON.

No fucking wonder we can't have civilized political discourse anymore. We can't even read a bartender's account of a shitty customer on Facebook without launching into a cyber-bullying frenzy.

Just stop. This has been a failure on every level.

good andrew is hilarious, and should give the money to some workers' rights groups.

neutral andrews deserves a far more sincerely apology. and maybe many of them.

bad andrew deserves to be outed, but outed properly.

victoria was willing to use social media to shame someone who insulted her once, it seems appropriate that social media be used to shame her now.

what she did caused a guy to receive far worse insults, far more publically, and way more of them. (not to mention the private emails.)

her apology appeared wanting, seemed self-absorbed, and didn't include much of an effort to right the wrongs she caused. she should at least request that everyone send innocent andrew an apology (or compliment).

but yeah, i think i'm about tired of this topic, too.

Good Andrew = funny. But don't send her money. :/ I'm sure she is popular on the Hill for a reason, she seems like a right sassy broad. But going online w/ this, w/ specifics = really unclassy. I maybe woulda run this "story" - if at all - by just using Andrew's first name. Anyone who hung out w/ him / saw him around would know who it was. Still awaiting an acknowledgement that the wrong guy got hassled over this brouhaha.

Bad Andrew = the name of my next punk band.

Has no one here heard of the Golden Rule?

The person who left a rude note instead of a tip did something bad. The person who received the rude note instead of a tip proceeded to identify who she thought had given her the note, and treated him a way distinctly unlike she would want to be treated.

And now, all of you -- including many of the same people who piled on the innocent guy in the first place -- want to continue the cycle of mistreatment even further?

Andrew from California, please trust your conscience, and ignore the commenters here who would like to see the world become a meaner place. Your action will bring happiness to someone, and that's all the justification you need.

@20: Not from me. I just sent off a private email asking Dan to post an apology. As the co-founder of It Gets Better, I'd like to think that Dan knows a thing or two about bullying, which makes me even sadder that he played any sort of a role in allowing this to happen.

@24: No one person (not even Dan) can claim full responsibility for what happened. But that's precisely the point. When a gay kid commits suicide, it's usually not because of any one person (possibly excepting their parents), but from the cumulative effect of *everyone* harassing them.

If you want a world without harassment, then start at home. You're not going to make the world less mean by being mean yourself.

@28

are you kidding me? this has got to be the best advertising for bimbos ever - why would they fire her? doesn't cost them anything and gets people in the door to spend money and big tips on victoria (and likely other servers).

i'm sure bimbos has seen their business spike in the past few days and, likely, after every one of these update posts go online. hell, i kind of wonder if this whole thing wasn't staged.

@29 - Really? I've eaten there in the past and will NEVER eat there again. Primarily because if that waitress ever served my table, I would tell her she was an awful person and just don't need that self-inflicted drama. Of course, to your point, there may be 10 people who would go there to tell her she was wonderful...but it won't be me.

The Seatle P-I said she apologized for blaming the wrong Andrew Meyer. But I dunno if that's enough, frankly. Sure, whoever he is, he shouldn't have written anything about her weight on her receipt. But she mocks on him later, saying he's dressed like "that gay kid on Glee"; brags in her comments about how her boss said she'd be free to --hit-- the customers, should they return - "I wouldn't write you up" - & these comments were copied from her FB, via a commenter on the P-I, "Sportsvideo" -

That Victoria was foolish enough to go to a network as wholly inadequate as is Facebook for what should have been a simple fact-finding mission done elsewhere, was her only mistake.

Any fool can go to the website at http://www.soundpolitics.com/voterlookup…, plug in Andrew Meyer, and strongly deduce that the Andrew Meyer who lives, oh, say, less than half-a-mile from Bimbo's is the correct target. Why you can even get the names of everybody who lives in his building, for quick and easy correspondence.

The waitress in this case was 100% in the right and her employer has but two options with regard to the incident:

(a) They can STFU and stand behind her silently

or

(b) They can dare to discipline her and then endure the wrath of her reaction which will be a lawsuit based on the public knowledge that Bimbo's has fostered a workplace environment in which harrassment is common. (she has photographic proof of same, and we've all now seen it)

As for the rest of us, we should use resources far more credible than mere Facebook and send Andrew Meyer up the river where he belongs. Obviously he had every right to leave a $0.00 tip, but the waitress had every right to do as she pleased with a 'personal' message written to her, and on stationery of HIS choosing.

Of course this is not about the tip... and soon the wrath of western society will come down hard upon the correct Andrew Meyer, as it should.

All we can do is sit back, laugh and taunt as justice is served hot and steamy to Andrew Meyer.

@32 yeah keep trying. Vickie's lucky if the entire internet doesn't give her an eating disorder or worse. She's been called out and sadly will be the victim of the same behavior she inflicted on an innocent Andrew.

When I first saw this story, I thought "what an asshole", that the guy would make a point of writing a big zero, and then a personal insult on the bill, so if that's all there is to the story, then I agree that he's a big ass, but beyond that, I part ways with the mob.

The fact that the main source on the story-the "victim" herself, misidentified the culprit ought to teach people something about jumping to conclusions, and joining a revenge mob based on what you think you know. In reality there are only a small handful of people that really know much about the story, and even then, they could have parts of it wrong.

Even if a fellow employee witnessed the whole thing, perhaps the server and the customer had a history-maybe they were neighbors 10 years ago, and she ran over his dog in anger after stepping in shit one too many times-who the fuck knows. That's why it's best to stick to fighting your own battles, and if you don't have any, be glad.

If you have pent up aggression, then get it out playing video games or paintball, or something. Joining this pathetic, self righteous lot of would-be heros jumping to the aid of the damsel in distress (or expert shit-stirrer), means you seriously need to get a life.

What we know of this ridiculously overblown, pathetic tale, is quotes from one angry person, along with a photo of a piece of paper, that, for all we know was created in photoshop, or maybe was a rude customer's actual bill, but was simply scribbled on by someone who thought it would be a funny hoax, before being photographed. Maybe the customer was as big a jerk as he seems, but used a stolen credit card.

Or maybe the server and the customer used to be friends, but had a falling out, and now are making up ways to "get" each other. Maybe, they have a running joke between them, of insulting each other that was good natured for a while before someone's feelings got hurt, and it turned into a feud.

Or maybe one of the comments on the story which claimed the waitress made an insulting remark about the weight of the customer's companion when they ordered, was true, and either "Andrew" or his date, made the infamous written comment in retaliation.

The scenarios that could conceivably fill in the gaps in the story are virtually endless, because, let's face it, a couple of angry online quotes, along with a photo of a piece of paper with a nasty comment written on it, is not enough for anyone but an idiot to think they really know the story well enough to join a revenge mob. Perhaps I shouldn't call a mob idiots, but that is exactly what they are in my book, by definition.

Note to the editors at The Stranger: I realize you think you're super hip and cute, but stirring a giant pot of shit over a bit of gossip that can't even be called news is something even your childish readers might see through. This isn't journalism, it's making stories out of thin air, and worse, stories that could spiral out of control, and lead to someone getting beaten or killed.

In other words, you might have your regular readers swooning over how trendy, hip and clever you are, but as a "newspaper" you suck. I've seen high school papers that had a more professional editorial staff. Shame on you.

"strongly deduce that the Andrew Meyer who lives, oh, say, less than half-a-mile from Bimbo's is the correct target. Why you can even get the names of everybody who lives in his building, for quick and easy correspondence."

"Strongly deduce"-really-that is the call to action you're putting out? "Strongly deduce", obviously means, your guess has a better than even chance to be right, so why not try to destroy the lives of anybody with the name that lives in the area. And maybe harass his neighbors while you're at it, for good measure.

What's the worst that can happen-an innocent man getting beaten or killed? Or perhaps on the bright side, a rude customer gets beaten or killed-in your mind, would that make it all worthwhile?

I suppose you weighed the pros and cons of your comment before posting and concluded that destroying the wrong person, or several people over the trivial matter, is a small price to pay, if the chances are pretty good you targeted the right guy, so that Victoria's revenge dream can be fulfilled. Too bad she can't even identify the right guy from a photo. Which means you better "get" every Andrew Meyer that might be him, just to be sure.

#37 - As far as what it "obviously means" goes, it obviously means that someone living within half-a-mile of the scene of the crime is very clearly more likely the culprit than is a man in Texas who has not been to Seattle in many years!!!!

Just how many Andrew or Drew Meyers do you expect you'll find in the nearby surroundings? Bimbo's isn't exactly high on the list of local eateries into which tourists tend to regularly stumble.

Now how damn difficult is it for you people to go to various online sources, consult detailed identification records, associate those with Facebook and other internet sites for photo confirmation, and have Victoria flush this guy out for the good of all society???

Public sentiment will dictate the results to follow - it doesn't have to be you...

Now goooooooooooooooooooo !!!
