Portland Is Kicking Your Ass, Seattle

Posted by on Thu, Oct 6, 2011 at 3:13 PM

Our brethren at The Mercury are reporting on Occupy Portland, where police are estimating a massive crowd on the first day of their Occupy protests:

The march is heading up Burnside, stretching five whole blocks with an official estimate of 4,000-5,000 people! Everything is peaceful chanting, whooping, and hollering.

They've got a liveblog here.

Seems pretty obvious.

March along major streets = No Arrests
Squat and refuse to move = 25 Arrests.

Portland is kicking our asses because what theyre doing is the complete opposite of what these idiots in Westlake are doing.

Well, Portland picked much better occupation sites - Waterfront Park and Pioneer Courthouse Square. Is it because they have better sites to choose from? Or do they just have better sense?

Gee, a protest march? How innovative and shockingly more efffective than a bad camping trip at Westlake Center. Who'd imagined more people would be involved?

@7, that's the cleverest comment you could think of?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics web site the unemployment rate in Aug. (most recent available) in the Seattle-Tacoma metro area was 8.7 percent. In Portland it was 9 percent. There you go. So there you go. Put a bird on it!

I'm not sure it's safe to walk the streets of Seattle right now. Have you heard about the shit geysers?

PDX is kicking our asses because Portland doesn't have the same density of snarky, pseudo-libertarian corporate suck-ups that Seattle has.

We're still beating Portland in the "having minorities living here" department.

"Westlake Park" is a smoking section for 2 adjacent malls. Waterfront Park is actually a park, with grass, trees and water.

Plus, what @5 said.

Sorry folks..but not only did we have a 5,000+ turnout, with zero arrests so far, OUR mayor came out as we passed city hall & cheered us on, as well as choosing to not enforce curfew laws for the night. If only it could be done this way everywhere, but then...where would the national headlines be?

Two tweets from Portland Police show the difference to be striking...

https://twitter.com/#!/PortlandPolice

"Portland Police are looking forward to a safe and peaceful event. #occupyportland #staysafe"

"PPB is sworn to protect and serve ALL Portlanders. We will be present to ensure a safe and orderly event for everyone. #occupyportland"
