Evonne, I would like to suggest you go back to my sentence about stupid questions. Here is a stupid question: "What would you say if someone told you they wanted to cause you a great deal of pain and/or discomfort?" That's basically what your reporter asked.

If you have two Part Time Jobs and you need more money, then get a third part time job or get a better single job. The federal government isnt going to make your current job any better, theyre not going to force your manager or owner to give you a 3$ raise.
Now I agree that the government should do something about the high cost of living, lets try to lowe insurance costs, or bring fourth cheaper energy or utility costs, but theres no way in hell they are going to lift a finger to improve the shitty job you choose to apply for.

@ 13 I don't see how that is an unfair question. It would seem that would be a perfect opening to speak to the lack of jobs, part-time or otherwise, for many people in Washington State and around the country. Anyone that participates in a protest should be able to articulate at least one or two coherent and on message sound bites.
I marched several times during the lead up to the Iraq war and was interviewed twice; I had a few talking points read that could easily be adapted to fit the reporters’ questions. The people participating in this protest should do the same, especially if they want to see this "movement" grow from a group of aging activists, enthusiastic collegeish kids and reporters from The Stranger.

@15: I agree that the person representing "us" should be prepared for any and all stupid questions. I also think the question is insulting and carries insinuations not handwaved away with false claims of even-handedness, as if reality is equally valid for the left-wing and right-wing perspective.
That said, ideally the protesters should be able to respond to rude, inarticulate, and other dumb questions from the media without coming off as if the questions are rude and hostile.

In other words, if the reporter is going to talk to you from the perspective of a child, give them the answer as if they're a child. Polite, straight to the point, and without getting angry or more emotional than is necessary.

Don't blame reporters. If you want to place the blame for only covering violent - or potentially violent - news, the onus for that belongs squarely on the shoulders of the Assignment Desk Editors, who parcel out stories to the reporters & camera ops.

It could be interpreted as the reporter feeding a line to the protester. It would have sounded better, though, if the protester himself had said "Get a job? You mean a third one?"

Why is that an unreasonable question? Two part time jobs = One full time job. If I had one full time job and was short on money, wouldn't a logical thought be to get a part time job? Just because you have multiple jobs doesn't excuse you from having to work the same amount of hours an anyone else who might be working 70 hours at one place of employment.

It might be reasonable if 1. there were any jobs to be had, and 2. if the logistics of having three part-time jobs were even remotely feasible for most people. There simply aren't that many night/weekend/off-hour jobs available.
I once took a part-time job out of desperation, with the hope of taking a second part-time job to make ends meet. But my boss wanted me to be on call every day in the event that my full-time coworker called in sick for work. Do you see how that would have made it impossible for me to find a second job? There aren't that many weekend and night jobs available, and very few that pay better than minimum wage.

There are always jobs...There aren't always jobs you want and there aren't always jobs that pay well or give benefits or are close to home, etc. That does not mean there are not jobs. Judging by the amount of bad tatts, serial chain smoking, facial piercings, schmohawks, dyed hair and generally god awful personal hygiene I saw, the job opportunities at Occupy Seattle are pretty limited.

Your picture caption here speaks volumes about the ineffectiveness of this protests. "One of these things" -- legs in stockings and high heels -- "is not like the others" -- legs in dirty skinny jeans and decrepit Converses. It is quite clear that the person in the high heels, who is struggling to survive on a crappy low-paying local TV gig, and is thus absolutely in the 99% -- maybe more so than the dirty sneakers guy, who could quite well turn out to be a trust-fund anarchist -- is not welcome. So your 99% shrinks even further. Even with the unions, you're around 5% of the population; without them, statistically insignificant.

@31: I wait for the bus in Westlake everyday, and most of the protesters didn't look out of sorts, perhaps with a little longer hair.

They had on regular, untattered, unstained, unbro-ish clothing, glasses, plain t-shirts and jeans. It looked like "normal" people usually do.

Yes? Applying does not mean that you get hired, unless you're again too myopic to realize how many resumes/applicants there are for every job. Talk to people who actually employ others, everyone i know who tries to hire someone for positions has some 50 applicants for every hire.
