Unions to Join Occupy Wall Street Protests

Posted by on Fri, Sep 30, 2011 at 10:50 AM

Anne Martens—tweeting as @glossolaliac, who I recommend following—directs our attention to this article in Slate:

Crain's New York Business, New York Magazine, and The Village Voice are reporting that a "a loose coalition of labor and community groups" have pledged solidarity with the protests at Zuccotti Park in New York's financial district and are organizing a march for next Wednesday, October 5.

The list of labor groups involved in Wednesday's planned march include: The United Federation of Teachers; 32BJ SEIU & 1199 SEIU; Workers United; and Transport Workers Union Local 100, which has 38,000 members.

Additionally, Working Families Party, Moveon.org, Make the Road New York, the Coalition for the Homeless, the Alliance for Quality Education, Community Voices Heard, United New York and Strong Economy For All are involved in the organization of the march.

Good for them.

It's about damn time.....I recall a political action group I was with notifying the Postal Service Union back in 2005 about the legislation being drafted (later passed in 2006) to privatize and defund the USPS, and destroy their union.

We also mentioned that they had best begin paying attention to all the offshoring of jobs, as that would also affect future survival (we had petitioned them about that on and off over the past 20 years).

It's 2011 and that union has finally retracted their heads from their butts and gotten active on the matter --- kind of late in the game, I'm afraid.

In 2014, they go after the coppers' unions and pension funds, but I doubt anyone will care about those anti-union clowns, especially by that time.

Great! This thing isn't going away, it's getting bigger. Maybe we can put our cynicism aside for half a minute and support what's happening.

Will these unions go to Wall Street after they've picketed The Stranger for being a scab outfit that refuses to pay union wages and provide union benefits?

Stranger workers need to walk off the job until a union is recognized to bargain wages, hours and conditions for them. No contract, no work!

Don't talk about what other unions do until you are union yourself!
