Such Nice Dogs...

Posted by on Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 11:19 AM

THEY JUST WANT A HAIRCUT.

(The part where the pit bull gets ahold of the guy on the counter's ankle is pretty much the beginning of my worst nightmare. Yes, it makes me a breed profiler, but every time a pit bull is walked past me on the street, I see its jaws and their proximity to my ankle and think about the horrible clamping...)

Any animal can attack, at any time, for any reason. Golden retrievers have sharper teeth, they draw much more blood. Just sayin'.

No doubt, but it would be hard to stab the dog where it counts, back of the neck, major artery, dog would bleed to death, but pass out long before it actually died. I think the blow dryer is the better options.

Its a shame, it appears to be one guy fending himself off the whole time, while the others little or just stand back and watch the event unfold.

@5 - I'd have a Golden bite me or my child over a Pit any day. Go ahead, Golden, draw more blood, as opposed to a Pit (or bulldog) clamping down and crushing my child's arm bones. Flesh wounds heal up better, less chance of nerve damage.

Yes, there are WAY MORE Golden Retriever bites per year in the US than Pit bites. There are also WAY MORE Golden Retrievers.

That guy basically did everything wrong you could do in a dog attack possible. Chasing after a dog with a hair dryer and smacking it with a barber's smock and slapping it are simply going to egg it on. The dog feels threatened and he's in an enclosed area, so he's just going to keep attacking.

Walk the hell away from the dog, you idiots. Put a door between you and the animal. Jesus.

I have to agree, I don't see an aggressive dog here. I see an overgrown puppy who is SUPEREXCITED about having things to chase and chew and grab and play with. People running around and flailing only encourages that dog to think "YAY PLAYTIME". That's not the right way to calm an excitable dog, nor is it really the smartest way to defend yourself in event of a dog attack.

I think one of the recommended videos is of the same incident. It looks like the dog approached someone outside, who then panicked and ran into the barber shop. Running from a dog is going to result in a chase. The dog comes into the barbershop in "YAY PLAYTIME" mode and oh my goodness, look at all the people! Yay!

For comparison, this dog is actually trying to attack someone (note: dog gets tazed, bro): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGUyMFPJR…
This is a pittie, playing as pitties do (although this guy is an idiot): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gat1SiDRJ…

I know it goes against all our instincts but it has worked for me many times. When confronted with a threatening dog I call it and hold my hand out. This has worked at least five or six times. The dogs always look confused and their demeanor changes. I'm not thinking I could do it with a dog like this. But it has worked.

This was not a vicious dog attack.

This was a playful puppy thinking he was being played with. Every time he had the opportunity to BITE he only mouthed them instead...his whole body language is "PLAY WITH ME!" not "I KILL YOU!"

Everyone freaked out and was behaving badly but if you watch carefully he didn't actually hurt anyone.

Strange how different people can see totally different things. This dog wasn't going to hurt anyone.

@27 All those people who were there were acting as though they've never seen a dog before, so I don't have a whole lot of confidence in their assessment of the situation. Chasing a dog around and swinging shit in its face is not going to make it stop.

I love all the calm-and-cool responses about how those guys responded in the wrong way. Easy to say, as you don't have a dog you don't know coming at you in a confined space. Those same calm-and-cool fellas would probably be pissing their pants had they been in the same situation. It's also worth mentioning that the local news in Providence, where this occurred, said the dog bit three children before it made it's way into the barbershop.

It was playing— playing aggressively. But. Even a playful pitbull can fuck you up. Especially if you don't know anything about dogs and over-react. Like these people did — who are probably used to seeing fighting pits owned by tough-guy dip-sits. So who can blame them.

A poorly socialized and untrained dog can go from hyped out play-aggression to dominance displays to biting off your face pretty quickly. Especially if everyone around it is freaking out. Clearly that's what is happening in this video.

You can blame these people for being idiots all you want but the owner of that dog is the only one culpable.

But enough of this. Did you know that a golden retriever started World War One by shooting Arch Duke Ferdinand?

I don't know the dog's intentions. Maybe it was just playing, although it had reportedly just bitten 3 neighborhood children. But fine, maybe it was just playing.

Being afraid of dogs is not so uncommon; for all we know one or more of those men in the barber shop has been attacked by a dog. Dogs of many breeds can and do seriously hurt people. Many people may primarily be exposed to dogs used in security roles. Control of this particular dog was the responsibility of its owners, and their failure in that responsibility came at the expense of the people in this video.

The idea that a bunch of internet wankers who weren't even in the room at the time -- that would be us -- should watch this video and lay judgment on these people, talk about what THEY did wrong, just seems bizarre beyond belief to me, utterly upside down.

@42 Exactly. That was just bizarre. The dog was all PLAYTIME YEAH and those guys started running around like dumbasses. At least now I understand how these BLOODTHIRSTY PITBULL ATTACKS happen. A pitbull is trying to play, people who are afraid of dogs take it as a sign of aggression and flail around, the pitbull gets more excited (it takes the flailing as a sign that they are playing back) and gets more rambunctious, dumbasses take the escalation as a further threat and start trying to get violent, pitbull is puzzled that his playtime is turning into a fight and defends itself. Then some other dumbass posts a video of the PITBULL ATTACK, creating more fear and sowing the seeds of the next incident.

I need to post a video of myself being charged by a VICIOUS! PITBULL! and calmly turning my back and ignoring it. That's all it takes not to be mauled to death by these bloodthirsty beasts. Dumbasses.

The dog was clearly playing. I've lived my entire life with dogs - my father kept a huge pack of hound dogs - and this dog was exhibiting typical "play" behavior. But that's the problems with pit bulls - even when they're playing, those jaws (particularly with a young dog that doesn't know limits) can cause serious damage. You can't eradicate the breed. That's just not going to solve anything. For one thing, the dipshits would just go on to mess up another breed pretty quickly (check out what happened to cocker spaniels after Lady & the Tramp). What you CAN do is license them. Require classes, spaying and neutering. Put up obstacles to owning them. Pit bulls are great - if you're an experienced dog owner with a sense of responsibility.

its not these people's responsibility to know what to do when a strange dog comes into their shop. the "those dipshits don't know dogs" attitude here is weird. they shouldn't have to know anything. maybe none of them have ever had a dog!
it's the owner who is responsible for it all. all of it.

I don't understand how there were that many grown men in one room and none of them were able to take that dog down.

Pits are strong, yes, but they're not that big. You could tackle that dog pretty easily if you man up and grab him instead of just swatting him with things. Sure you might get bit a few times in the process, might even draw some blood, but there's no way *that* many dudes should be unable to subdue one dog.

I should know, I've done it before with a large German Shepherd mix. And I'm a WOMAN. :P

Recall, these people are not in a dog park, but a BARBER SHOP. They may or may not know how to deal with dogs generally, but that shouldn't matter in a BARBER SHOP. At a barber shop, I'm expecting a haircut and nothing more, unless there's a sign that says "Mind The Pitbull" or "Free Dog Attack".

To the be-calm crowd: some lose their shit around dogs because wise owners like this one loose them in public near small children; you don't know which among them has survived a near-fatal bite. (Could be worse--that kid still has a face.) Good luck getting them calm around *well-socialzed* dogs, much less near a hyper, nippy pitbull. At least they can avoid dogs altogether, right? In a barber shop? Good luck with that, it seems...

And tell me how this works: You set your dog loose among a group of people that the dog may or may not know, who may or may not be capable of dealing with your particular dog, or with dogs at all, who may or may not become aggressive toward your dog, and it's THEIR responsibility to adjust to YOUR dog? Not your responsibility to socialize, or to train, or *minimum*, not set your dog loose in uncontrolled spaces?

How does that work? Explain why sharing the air with your dog--wholly against their will, note--obligates them to cope with your dogs whim? Because it makes no sense, I see it everywhere, and a lot of owners really, really feel that's okay.

I'm not saying that dog should have been in a barber shop. I don't know how he got there, but the owner was probably negligent. No matter how well-behaved your dog is (and that was not a well-socialized dog), you should no more set it free to jump on people than you should let a couple of three-year-olds run wild in an Apple Store. The point is, to someone who knows pits, it's weird to see such a shitstorm erupt around what is basically a big dumb baby. But it does explain a lot about their sinister reputation.

Obviously it was the owners fault. A loose dog hazards the safety of others and of the dog itself.

But I've never seen that many brainless grown men in one small room in my life. The dog was clearly playing and acting like damn fools didn't help anything. You don't have to be a dog lover or even familiar with them to stay calm and react intelligently when confronted by one. I count 4 or 5 full grown men and one playful dog that may weigh 30 pounds. And the dog won. But then, he was smarter than they are.

I tend to be with the folks saying that the dog was playing. But, to be fair, the dog *did* bite two of the men in that barbershop. They may have been 'play' bites, but they were bites.
