Health / 2012 How Many Women Will Michele Bachmann Kill?

Unlike Paul, I tend to only follow nonfictional political candidates, so I hadn't really been paying much attention the whole Michele Bachmann vaccine kerfuffle. Something about the HPV vaccine spreading crony capitalism to innocent little 12-year-old girls, or something. But it turns out that Bachmann's anti-vaccine grandstanding may actually end up killing people:
When politicians or celebrities raise alarms about vaccines, even false alarms, vaccination rates drop.
“These things always set you back about three years, which is exactly what we can’t afford,” said Dr. Rodney E. Willoughby, a professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a member of the committee on infectious diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
So if the vaccine prevents HPV, and HPV causes cervical cancer, and Bachmann's uninformed/unprincipled attack on "Perrycare" has prevented some parents from vaccinating their daughters, then Bachmann, at least indirectly, will be responsible for God knows how many deaths when a small percentage of these unvaccinated girls (or their partners) eventually die from an otherwise preventable cancer.
I'd suggest that in the future, in the interest of public health, Bachmann refrain from talking on subjects about which she knows absolutely nothing, but I suppose that would leave her completely dumb as well as completely stupid.

BTW, Troll...Did you know that John Leonard (who you are channeling) was the head of the Gay City Health Project and was known for barebacking guys if the thought they looked "healthy".

WOW! Today's trolls are in rare form. Once again the health of children and the ethical responsibilities of public officials takes a back seat to 'Dan (prince of darkness) Savage did it first.' Which of course makes it ok.
Oh and @ 4. An effort to educate the public and the healthcare community about the vaccine so that individual parents can make informed decisions is very, VERY, different from spreading wild unsubstantiated claims about vaccines causing developmental or cognitive delays.

It's okay Goldy, those 12 year-old girls probably would have just turned into sluts who engaged in pre-marital sex anyway, so if they die for lack of a demonstrably effective vaccine, then that's just God's punishment on them for um, er, possibly doing something in the future that they haven't actually done yet.

I suggest that the stranger refers to her as Michele "hates gays, loves cancer" Bachmann from now on.

The damage caused by anti-vaccine activists is clear and there's every reason to believe that Bachmann will add to that damage.
But it's important to recognize (especially for us liberals) that, for whatever reasons, anti-vaccination is mostly an insanity of the Left. It's the Left's version of, "I didn't come from no monkey."
And if the theoretically probable deaths of kids caused by Michelle Bachmann are important to note (and they are), why does Slog consistently ignore the objectively measurable happening-right-now deaths of kids caused by Obama? Are the lives of kids who might be killed by a Republican somehow more valuable than the lives of kids who are actually and presently being killed by a Democrat?
But it's important to recognize (especially for us liberals) that, for whatever reasons, anti-vaccination is mostly an insanity of the Left. It's the Left's version of, "I didn't come from no monkey."

Cancers. I wish people would stop acting as if HPV only causes cervical cancer. It causes multiple cancers. And the vaccine protects against HPV-related cancer of numerous forms. It's not 100% protection, but it significantly increases a person's protection against numerous cancers. That's part of why the vaccine is useful even for people who do not have a cervix. And part of why it can be spread through means other than PIV intercourse. Although being a touch-based disease, it can spread even to the cervix without PIV intercourse, that's just an easier and more likely way to get it there.
