Kristen Chenoweth's Explains Her Pro-Gay Christianity

Posted by on Wed, Sep 14, 2011 at 11:49 AM

She confuses Moses and Noah (and realizes it), and hers is clearly a loosey-goosey take on the faith, but still, more Christians like this, please.

Thank you, Towleroad.

More Christians like this, but still less Christians in total, please.

Meh, just would be nice if they could not allow their religion to influence their logic. Oh, and FYI, there is a growing number of christians and such churches that follow much like her.

I wonder if this is a cause or effect of her appearing on Glee.

@3 Eeew, she was on that show? Well, can't all be perfect I guess.

Oh. Well, if our sexuality is innate, and we the helpless victims of it, then let's remove the legal and social bars on necrophilia and bestiality. God made them that way, according to Ms. Chenoweth, so that's okay and we shouldn't judge!

And those born with heart disease? Embrace it! Eat deep fried Ding Dongs breakfast lunch and dinner, and enjoy that heart attack!

All you alchoholics in AA? Get back into the bars and liquor stores, since losing your jobs, families, houses and health are secondary to 'how you're made.'

Those born with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or any other mental illness? You're born that way, so you shouldn't recieve any treatment or other assistance for your disease!

Because one is born with some congenital defect doesn't make the defect better. It just means the person has to play the hand they're dealt. Homosexuality, like any mental illness, should be treated for the good of the patient.

She's famous for singing on Broadway, how could she not be on Glee

@5: Seattleblues, today you learn to distinguish harmful atypicality from benign atypicality.
What harm does homosexuality do to those so inclined?

@5 your viewpoints are so ignorant

Seattleblues, seriously? What is WRONG with homosexuality. It doesn't hurt anyone, not even themselves, the only people who feel hurt by it are those who don't want to leave them be. All the other sexual acts do hurt something, though the necro one to me is just nasty some people do believe that the dead are sacred in some way. You know the rest of what you posted is garbage, bad sarcasm is bad. But most importantly, even if homosexuality was a choice and not something they were born with, it doesn't hurt ANYTHING ... so why is it anyone's business? Dare you to try to demonstrate how it hurts something, double dare you.

For those who are encouraged by similar things, check out this transgender re-naming/re-baptism ceremony. It's the actual transcript, not a story, so don't read if church language makes you itch.

@10 That is freaking AWESOME. I knew a pastor in Seattle (she preached to homeless women) who did similar things. Forgot with christian cult it was (Baptist I think?) ... she was ridiculed by her peers because she was an open lesbian at the time to, also one of the most open minded preachers I have met.

She's been an outspoken supporter of gay people and our rights throughout her entire career. She's always said that Christianity taught her not to judge and that she didn't think Jesus judged or would have judged gay people. I think it's very cool that someone with as much media exposure as she has (Broadway, PBS specials, Disney movies, TV series, albums) is not afraid to be positive in public forums about gay people.

SB, every minute you spend on slog is time taken away from your family.

Dan and Christopher should give Seattleblues a 0.005% cut of all ad click revenue on posts where he rails about the heinous mental illness of gayness. Like, the next time Jen posts about an art opening, Seattleblues could quickly drop an explanation of how the arts inform and encourage gay mental illness--100 comments from the arguments! Next time Paul reviews a comic book, Seattleblues can say randomly that skintight spandex encourages gay mental illness and longing for men--100 comments!

Seattleblues, necrophilia, and bestiality are done without consent. Everybody should eat properly, but people with heart disease have a physical disease. Alcoholism is an addictive disorder. People with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder etc. are mentally ill.

Homosexuality is not a disease, addiction or mental disorder. It's between consenting adults. Attempts to change a gay person's sexuality can lead to other psychological problems, but in and of itself, homosexuality is a normal variant of human sexuality.

Why is it so important to you that gay people suppress their homosexuality?

That was sweet. I'm inclined to think that we can tell what someone really believes by their actions. It is tiresome to hear someone call themselves a Christian and yet see no example of acting like Jesus on a regular confirmed basis. It renders their proclamations meaningless, in my opinion. The few interviews of Ms. Chenoweth that I have seen reveal a consistency in trying to act like Jesus (as found in the Gospels). Her actions match her words, and that is refreshing to see. After all if you can't live out what you proclaim to believe on a daily basis, what good is either proclaiming it or clinging to the idea that you actually believe it? It seems foolish and more than hypocritical. Just my $0.02.

@10 - Nadia Bolz-Weber is awesome. She is a fantastic example of a NALT (or is it a non-NALT since she is so outspoken).

Just an FYI - it wouldn't be a re-baptism. She is an ELCA Lutheran, and our denomination believes in one baptism because you are baptized into the Christian faith, not into a particular denomination.

The rite described is beautiful, though.

Sheryl @19 -- yup, you're right it's not re-baptism. I spoke of it that way 'cause of the way the memory of the original baptism was invoked. To me it seemed like an automobile "transfer of title" was being applied to the original baptism.

Kristin C's comments remind me of another of those rare creatures, the Real Christian - Dale Evans.

During the battle against the Anita Bryant-inspired California anti-gay proposition in the 70s (the one portrayed in the movie "Milk") someone asked Dale Evans for a comment about gays. Since Evans was a devout evangelical, the interviewer must have expected disparaging remarks about the evil gays.

Instead, her comment was, "Sorry, but I'm so busy loving everybody that I don't have time to hate anybody."
