The Bearded Ladies of Berlin Fashion Week

Posted by on Tue, Sep 13, 2011 at 8:34 AM

Look! A fashion designer has found a new way to make women look like freaks!

Skeletal, bald ladies wearing whiskers are this year's trick by German designer Patrick Mohr. Last year, Mohr mixed homeless people with professional models, and called it "The Road to Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions."

(Tip by The Stranger's Worn Out columnist, Marti Jonjak.)

Not very much different from the designers who display their clothes on concentration camp survivors/anorexic bedlam escapees.

Is it that he's making women look like freaks, or the spectacle of the fashion show look freakish? To be honest, I appreciated the discomfort the uncanny-valley-inspired faces brought up in me. It was like I could focus on everything but the clothes, which then challenged me to look to the clothing more intentionally.

Having no background, interest or appreciation for fashion stuff, I found the whole thing kind of interesting. It's hard (at least I think it would be hard) not to pay attention to the grotesque nature of the fashion show. This designer chose (maybe) to talk about that instead of the clothing, which looked drab and destined for the nearest Marshall's to me, but what do I know?

Then again, maybe I'm extending more credit than is due. Maybe this bastard feels traditionally male identified features dehumanize women and he's using this premise to further their status as objects beyond just being human clothing racks.

Either way, I appreciate the post. Oh, and that article on racism was one of the best things I've read this year.

Why does this make me think of Zoolander?

I think I was less thrown by the beards than by the horribly unnatural looking breast implants on that model. Hint: if you're that thin you actually look better flat chested so skip the implants that look like someone stuffed oversized gumdrops under skin.
