Did You Just Feel the Earth Shake?

Posted by on Fri, Sep 9, 2011 at 12:55 PM

Dom says he felt the earth shake. US Geological Survey says a 6.7 magnitude quake hit Vancouver Island at 12:41 pm. Did you feel it?

UPDATE: USGS has a whole bunch of great maps, including the following "Shake Map" showing the intensity of ground movement emanating out from the epicenter:

No, not at all.

But let's just pray it's not a foreshock. !!

I did not. A friend of mine in the U District did. I'm at the Fremont bridge and didn't notice a thing.

I'm on southern Vancouver Island, and we didn't feel anything.

Is it even remotely possible that I would have felt that in Eugene? Just a minute or two ago, my windows shook a bit as they do in a strong wind and I looked outside expecting to see the trees blowing around, and it was totally calm, so I though, hmm... was that a mild earthquake?

Nope, but I'm smack on the ground in a brick building. So, there's not a lot of wiggle available.

Yes! I live on the fourth floor of an old house in Victoria, and felt some gentle shaking that went on a little too long to be a truck passing by. Whenever this happens I look at the time so I can check later. Thanks for confirming!

Yes, the 1201 building swayed and creaked for about 45 seconds.

May have felt it a bit in Kirkland... I felt my office floor shake a bit. The parking garage is underneath me though so I assumed it was a big truck coming in for a delivery. It could have been either one.

Nope. Felt nothing in the U District.

My office downtown swayed enough to make me a bit seasick.

Blinds swayed and building did a lot of creaking at Union Square

@ 5, if you felt that at 12:41, then that was it. If it was significantly later (that is, if it was literally "a couple of minutes" before you got on and posted), then probably not. USGS isn't showing any other NW earthquakes today (yet).

Nope, not a damn thing in Fremont.

Yes! I actually just typed to a friend that "I think there was just a minor earthquake" two seconds after it happened. I live on Vancouver Island, so, yeah. Definite wavering, if not quite shaking.

Nothing in South Lake Union (new construction). Darn it.

If you didn't feel the quake, please refrain from posting about it on the internet, nobody really gives a shit if you didn't feel it. It's like saying you didn't see a shooting star ....or didn't hear a plane fly overhead. In conclusion, you are ruining the internets

Too late, Andy dear. The internets was ruined a long time ago. I think it was the dancing baby animation.

Ah, Catalina. The dancing baby, goatse, being rickrolled, "all your base," gecko45 - I'm not sure there was ever a time when the interwebz weren't ruined.

Cascadian 27
@17, the internets say that a seismic wave travels at about 5km/s through granite. So an earthquake with an epicenter in northern Vancouver Island might very well not be felt in Seattle for about a minute and a half.

I didn't feel it where I work, but we have construction going on outside the window and it shakes the building like a small, short earthquake several times a day.

I get the USGS instant messages when an earthquake of magnitude 4 or greater occurs anywhere in the World.

Several 4s in central California and the 6.7 near Vancouver today.

It looks like the West coast is due.

Please don't be idiots Seattle. Just be prepared--Not stupidly scared.

For some reason September is when something big always happens. Fuck September!

aw shit shit shit. a few nights ago i had a very vivid dream of a quake-induced tsunami hitting Seattle. shit. this does not make me feel better.

It wasn't along the subduction zone. If it had been, apparently then it would potentially be considered a foreshock.

I'm in Vancouver, but I didn't feel it at all. Though apparently some people up the street did, but they were on a high floor in a largely glass building, whereas I was in a brick one-storey.

I did, but I just figured that was due to my afternoon routine of rubbing one out.

Why do all the Slog and CHS blog posts call it a 6.7 when the data center you both link to say it was a 6.4? The 6.7 was the Nisqually quake in the 90s.
