Amazon Test-Marketing Delivery to 7-Elevens

Posted by on Fri, Sep 2, 2011 at 6:29 PM

Matt Hickey has an exclusive over at The Daily about a new delivery locker program Amazon.com is trying out at a Capitol Hill 7-Eleven:

According to a source with knowledge of the project, the idea is simple: these nondescript boxes will be in 7-Eleven stores across the country and act as a sort of P.O. box for Amazon purchases. Once a customer makes a buy on Amazon’s website he can select a 7-Eleven close to work, or on the way home and have the package dropped off there.

In an e-mail, Hickey says the trial 7-Eleven is at 15th and Madison.

I'm interested to see how this works out. 7-11s in Taiwan basically acted as a domestic shipping service, their stores ubiquitous in every neighborhood, it was actually a very cheap, efficient, and effective way of sending packages anywhere in the country from your local 7-11 to their's. While 7-11 isn't quite as prevalent here, I don't see why it wouldn't work for Amazon.

I'm not sure there are nearly enough 7-11's to make this really feasible in Seattle. And do you really want enough 7-11's to MAKE this feasible?

I'm confused. What's wrong with UPS?

Also, the same address as a BECU affiliated ATM.

Is the Amazon market for people who can't receive certain packages at work or at home that big?

@6: UPS does not give you a specific time that they deliver. So yeah I think the number of people who do not want to block out an entire day just to get a package from UPS is pretty big.

I would love this. I never buy things from Amazon because I live in an outdoor-access apartment on Capitol Hill and, well, duh.

TVDinner: You shouldn't be so arrogant. You should say "Some of us have to rent our labor".

@2 I'll be the first to admit that 7-11s here and 7-11s in Asia are dramatically different in just about all but name and color scheme. While I'm not one to buy much product in 7-11, I do appreciate their existence for their (potential for) services, particularly their credit union-friendly ATMs. A local, temporary PO Box could be a nice addition as well.
So, while I don't fully agree about not wanting more 7-11s (just mostly agree), I do agree there aren't enough currently to make 7-11 deliveries successful on a wider scale.

One of the nice things about living in large suburban apartment complexes here in Kent is that the Manager's Office is staffed every day and USPS, UPS, Fedex and the rest will leave packages there so I can pick them up later in the day or on weekends when I'm away.

In fact, I thought when the Feds were cutting Postal Services, rather than close Post Offices, they should compress postal routes.

For example, again as an apartment dweller, me, and the other approximately 1000 or so residents of the 34 buildings here have to pick up their mail at two mail kiosks.

Yes home owners spread out along country roads get door to door service. I suggest we go back to the style of Sam Drucker in Hooterville, where the local post office is a place that people pick up their mail.

For those commenting about people working, why not have your items delivered to work? I do that and quite a few of my co-workers do too. And I find most Amazon packages come via USPS(post office), at least they do to our work.

At that point, why not just take it the rest of the way to my house?

We do this in France. I pick up my package at a little tobacco/newspaper stand next to where I can get groceries. I trust them to have my package more than the delivery guy. It would be nice if they offered it at any local establishment that wanted to participate instead of a chain...

1. Matt Hickey is the man!

2. That 7-11 also has an ATM and gift cards. So you could go in there, get some cash, buy an Amazon gift card, and using an Amazon account with fake info, have something shipped to you via the 7-11 drop box. Completely anonymous shopping.

They need this in NYC where nobody has ever successfully received a residential delivery, but there's no 7-11s in NYC!

How will they solve this conundrum?

@16: What about when you order a vacuum cleaner? (Which I can get shipped for free, btw. Thanks, Amazon Prime!)
