Tonight at Sole Repair, a number of local arts organizations and literary magazines are coming together to present "Silence and Communication," a group reading in which 22 performers will circle the audience and speak briefly about the role of silence in communication. Rather than the performer taking a stage, the audience will turn to face each performer as they speak, making what co-organizer Greg Bem describes as a kind of dance performance. (Sole Repair's balcony will be open, if you're more in the mood to watch the whole thing from above.) Bem has said the performance is inspired in part by John Cage's work.

Contributors include Summer Robinson, Matthew Simmons, Nico Vassilakis, and Lisa Wells, plus many more. Fine lit magazines Hoarse and Pageboy will be available for sale before and after the event. Please check both of those out; they're tour guides to the young literary scene coming up in Seattle right now.

Tickets are $5, doors are at 7, and the performance begins at 7:30. According to the event's Facebook page, the performers will be split into two groups of 11, with a booze-buying intermission in the middle. The second set is scheduled to start around 8:15. It should be an interesting, strange time.

Everything else going on tonight is in the readings calendar.

When I was about 12 my mother took me to see John Cage play an amplified cactus in a courtyard in Santa Fe. I'll never forget that.

#3 - I thought the same thing. Maybe a cross between a chimp and Hugh Hefner?
