Social Network Darwinism

Posted by on Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 8:50 AM

Shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday night, a Yakima County sheriffs deputy attempted to pull over an off-road motorcycle, but the driver sped off, and the deputy was unable to keep up. And that might have been the end of the incident, until Social Network Darwinism kicked in:

However, several hours later authorities learned a 19-year-old man was bragging on Facebook about outrunning officers. A photograph on the web site was "strikingly similar to the one that eluded the deputy hours earlier," according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies than carried out a search warrant at 4 a.m. at the man’s home, where he was arrested pending charges of reckless driving and other infractions.

Fucking idiot.

I did this once, but it was pre-Facebook & my friends that I bragged to were trustworthy. Not that I would recommend it...

@14,

You're right. Writing about breaking laws isn't illegal, but breaking laws is illegal, and writing can be used as evidence.

@14: Writing about breaking laws constitutes probable cause, given that it was in conjunction with him fitting the description of the perp.

Get this guy a lawyer. If writing about breaking laws were illegal, all of the good authors would be in jail.

STJA @3, The use of "Darwinism" in this context is too well established to change now. I'm not entirely sure how obviously idiot behavior being an example of Darwinism is a bad thing, anyway.

4am search warrant? They couldn't wait until morning?

Was this one of the SWAT Team breaks in the door waving guns around and shooting the family pets search warrants?

I can't drive ... 145.

No, really, the limiter kicks in around 125. If I time it right I can break 130, but that's it.

Good on that photograph for outrunning the cops, but it should have known better than to hide on the internet.

Nineteen years old. Maybe he'll learn something from this and live to see 20. I wouldn't bet money on that, though.

Goldy, I hate to be a pedant, but that's not the correct use of "Darwinism". Natural selection is not Darwinism. If we want people to understand and accept evolution, it would be better to actually use (and if necessary, educate about) the terms that are used to describe and talk about evolution.

One of the rare times someone actually pulls this off--a high speed getaway--and they blow it? Go Team Yakima.
