A Reminder for the Victims of Irene

Posted by on Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 10:29 AM

Remember this?

Cantor raised some eyebrows on Wednesday when, in the aftermath of the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that rattled the East Coast and originated in his district, he said Congress will help those hurt by the earthquake but will require finding offsets for any federal aid.
The GOP is now making a habit of this hostage business. They have become the Mexican gangsters of American politics. In the words of that beautiful song that opens The Rescuers: "Who will rescue us?"

Why are they helping anyone? It's one thing for the government to help out in extraordinary situations like Katrina, but I thought this earthquake didn't do doodly. It's the incentive to have homeowner's insurance, or a rainy day fund for infrastructure damage. Whenever the gov't starts handing out money, even for a good cause, there always seem to be a pile of people trying to grab as much of it as they can with both hands.

'who will rescue us?' no one. the democrats are the only ones in a position to do so, and they will not even make an attempt. that's american politics today.

@1:

The strategy (so far as one can ascertain anything remotely along the lines of a strategy, that is) seems to be simply to find any excuse to cut slices out of the federal budget. So, the GOP line now seems to be: "you want relief funding from a natural disaster? Okay, we'll give you the money, but then we get to cut some other program or department funding to compensate."

Screw a "rainy day fund", just cut, cut, cut whenever they get the chance. They're intent seems to be to starve the beast until it keels over from malnutrition, SFAICT.
