Health care reform mandate: the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the individual mandate in the health care reform bill as unconstitutional in a 2 to 1 vote. The administration will probably appeal the decision to the Supreme Court, as the law's efforts to reduce insurance costs depends to no small degree on the mandate.
Aid contractor kidnapped: an American named Warren Weinstein who works for a company that frequently does relief and reconstruction work for USAID was kidnapped by armed attackers. As of yet, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack or issued demands for the Weinstein's release.
First Hill stabbings: SPD continues to investigate the grisly stabbings of two doctors and their infant adopted son (who died from his injuries). SPD has yet to release their theory of the crime.
Kalebu sentenced to life: Isaiah Kalebu, the man who committed the horrific South Park murder and rapes, was convicted to a life term and 98 years with no chance of parole yesterday. His surviving victim, Jennifer Hopper, wished him peace at his sentencing, writes Eli Saunders.
Rick Perry: the Governor of Texas and Prayer-a-Thon leader is expected to announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination today. News of the announcement was leaked earlier this week.
Transportation news: Dominic Holden reports that the proposed $60 car tabs (for road repair, transit, and bike and pedestrian improvements) will probably be on the ballot in November. Meanwhile, the mayor's proposal to build a high-capacity streetcar system is expected to be DOA in front of the City Council in its current form.
UK riots: UK PM David Cameron announced that he will be seeking advice from an American, Bill Bratton, who was police chief in Boston, New York, and LA. Because you really want the LAPD's advice on how to calm down an angry public.
The markets: investors were further confused by the Dow's finish; the index finished Friday with a 125 point gain. The stock markets have been all over the damn place this week.
McDermott harasser sentenced: a California man who left threatening messages for Seattle Congressman Jim McDermott was sentenced on Friday to a fine and 8 months in prison.
