British Government Considers Banning Social Media

Posted by on Thu, Aug 11, 2011 at 10:09 PM

In the wake of the recent violence in the U.K., British prime minister David Cameron has suggested banning Facebook, Twitter, Blackberry Messenger, and other social networks because people are using them to talk about and possibly organize riots.

Free flow of information can be used for good. But it can also be used for ill," said Cameron.

Huh, seems like only a couple months ago is was all these "repressive regimes" shutting down Twitter during social unrest. I guess now it's just the responsible thing for a beleaguered kind-hearted government to do.

People like that scare me. It's always an illusion, no politician could stop the internet even if they tried. They can only make it harder. On the flip side, if he was stupid enough to do it, the only conclusion would be more riots. The police can't handle it now? Just wait till no one can play farmville with their friends, or skype their moms. Turn those moltiv cocktails towards parliament. I'm sure that's Cameron's goal, whatever government can do to shit on the people, let's make a bad situation more deadly.

Why stop there? He should ban the English language itself. The rioters were using it communicate. And now that he realizes the danger of media hopefully he will stop using it altogether. Going forward Question Hour will take the form of crop circles and rock sculptures.

They need to close all supermarkets, they are an essential support system for the bad guys. Cut the electricity and water as well. Half-measures are just not going to work.

@4 - It's the queen's English, and she wants it back.

"organized riot" seems like an oxymoron to me.

Let's keep social media and ban government. Democracy is finally real and these clock-milkers are threatened by the idea that they're suddenly held to be accountable for shitting on justice when they're not busy providing cover for corporations who are wrecking the world.

They're conservatives. Of course every solution they propose is going to involve more oppressive measures. It's all they understand. Look for a "compromise" solution that involves unlimited power to intercept and disrupt all communications, probably paired with some kind of registration scheme to attempt to eliminate the possibility of anonymous communication.

"We believe some of the rioters have been employing scooters, cars, and other motorized vehicles to shuttle themselves to scenes of chaos and to subsequently flee them before the police have arrived; therefore, we have decided all motorized vehicle use shall be prohibited within the London city limits."

If they have the totalitarian superpowers to ban Facebook, maybe they should just ban riots.

Was Cameron taking talking points from Newt Gingrich again? Remember Newt's claim that we here in America have too much freedom of speech?

Social media, and things like Freedom of speech are great when they can be used to collect valuable information for marketing purposes, or used to raise your voice in praise of the great deals you get at Wal-Mart, or how wonderful Stainmaster carpeting is.

But when it goes too far, the gatekeepers of morality - church and state - must step in and tell people to cool it down. When that doesn't work, you must bring in the big guns.

Order must be kept. The wealthy must be allowed to continue their systematic accumulation of wealth at any cost. Anything else is Socialism, which is an offense to both God and free men. Just ask our troll, or any of our more Reactionary posters here on Slog.

Good thing you didn't use the modifier "suspected rioters" as the article you linked to states. Otherwise people wouldn't be in a stir over misreported statements. How can we have freedom if people knew what was really going on? Or more importantly, page hits?

Cell phones were jammed during parts of the WTO protests. FYI.

Why doesn't England just force cell providers to give MiniTru the power to block all digital communications whenever it wants? It's not hard.

That's interesting, banning Facebook, not that long after Zuckenberg attended the Bilderberg fest in Switzerland with David Rockefeller, Henry Kissinger, Charlie Rose and the rest of the gang.

I'd really like to see Cameron do that.......
