While You Were Out

Hey, I was "denounced by the GOP" today. They seem to have nothing but time on their hands, the GOP does, huh? No other, more pressing matters, gang? Nothing at all?

I made a joke about this not long ago, but it honestly wouldn't surprise me if the GOP made you into some sort Willie Horton-like poster child for the moral decay of America in the 2012 election. They seem to be singling you out as a target.

I think the most important thing about the Politico article came in the comments:
"Savage is just a hateful, bigoted, and discriminatory sex fiend who does not tolerate anyone other than his own ilk. He is the least tolerant person in the Country. His filthy perverted lifestyle has given him an adams apple the size of a banana."

Is that how that works?

@3 - I've always thought Dan's adam's apple was mighty cute, in a completely butch Chicago-tastic way. The size of a banana, huh? Obviously, the pictures I've seen were taken from his bad side.

It's cool, I stepped up to defend your honor in the comments. You have to beat them on their own turf.

"Savage has merely been frustrated by the astonishing lack of concern for fellow human beings, so-called Christians who are anything but. They dismiss entire groups of people, show very unChristian hatred of gays, Muslims, and anyone who does not follow their lifestyle. If you were good Christians, you'd be living your life without judgment on others, as that is God's place. It's your job to be a good person, which is not shown by groups who live through persecution and hate of gays.

Should Savage have said he wishes all Republicans are dead? Of course not. But at worst, he is mirroring the rhetoric given daily by hate organizations such as Focus on Family.

Dan Savage has done more good, and brought together more couples and families through his advice, than Focus on Family could ever dream of."

Republicans are dreadful people. They project their own problems onto others, they refuse to accept responsibility for their actions, and they are always the last people to reach for the check when it arrives at the table.

Cheap, boorish, and lousy in bed. No wonder they divorce frequently, and are big on hookers.

- templerubbing - I just got done being trolled by someone on my FB page over Michelle Bachmann & the high rate of GLBT youth suicides in her district. You know, where her husband has his "practice". Big surprise, that's not a major news story on CNN, I found it on the UK's Daily Mail. It gave me a headache. & it's 2:30 my time. To read this article & comments after..just, I'm gonna have nightmares.

& this is an issue, now. NOW? Gang, be prepared for our country to become a second-world economy, as neo-cons seem ready to sacrifice our nation's economic future for their ideological beliefs.

Oh, and gay people! Stop being such bigots. Commenter Sandy says:

"This is yet another example of the hypocritical gays spewing their hatred, bigotry, and venom toward anyone who disagrees with them, no matter how respectfully. The gays may be gaining acceptance for their agenda in parts of the country that are already liberal, but they will never gain acceptance in Middle America, certainly not with this vile and crude behavior. It's almost cute every time these anti-gay nutbags think they've come up with a nifty, brand new tactic when they whine variations of "you're being a bigot in not tolerating my bigotry," even though everybody's heard that 8 billion times before and the logic wouldn't convince even a relatively sentient five year old.

Almost.

The reason these people are foaming at the mouth is that THE HATERS ARE LOSING. Sorry for capitalizing, but I wanted emphasis. State by state, the tide is turning against them. Demographics are working against them, since the younger generation can't see why LGBT people shouldn't have equal rights, protections and marriage. Just as civil rights for people of color came to pass, so they will for LGBT people. To paraphrase Churchill, you can always rely on America to do what is right, once it has exhausted the all alternatives :-) . Well, they are exhausted, the time is coming, and this right-wing screeching is the noise these Canutes make as the tide of justice, fairness and equality washes over them.

you girls are putting on such a brave face
but we must face the fact that our Danny
has stepped into deep doodoo.

And just when he seemed about to make the jump
to the Big Time, too... :(

Pimping the suicide of teens
as an anti-xtian move was Brilliant!, darlin'

The press ate it up, no questions asked....

St Danny!

But-alas-
it seems that our Danny's
deviant disgusting bullying nature
just couldn't be checked, even for the sake of Fame and Glory.

We just HAD to pick on poor Marcus.
Crudely
Hatefully
Ad nauseam.......

We just HAD to wish the GOP Fuckin' Dead.
Elegant, Danny.
Very Elegant.....

And. most of all, we just HAD
(no two ways about it)
to share our fantasy about Fucking Rick.

(astute Danny watchers have known for years
that our boy had an unhealthy thing for Rick-
really quite embarrassing and obvious....)

Sure, there is a place for crude lewd boys like Danny.

Pressing Matters?

oh,
our little Danny is never so precious
as when he tries to talk about big boy subjects like politics.....

the Debt Ceiling?

what a wonderful whip to snap across the naked quivering buttocks of Barack and the Democraps.

CRACK!

they love it.

what did the man say; Never Let a "Crisis" Go to Waste?

there is no debt ceiling "crisis"
It is all theatre.
there is plenty of money to pay the bond holders.
plenty to keep the markets happy.
the Public "Service" Unions?
maybe not so much.....
(but then, that's the Beauty of it!)

Every time Barack or
little Timmy G or
our astute commentator Danny
raise the specter of DEFAULT they give the GOP a tighter grip on their throats.

perhaps our Danny imagines Speaker Boner in leather,
spanking him-
Bad Boy!
No you can't have Gay Marriage, you naughty pedophile!!
No we Won't raise the Debt Ceiling, you Socialist!!

dan - i suppose it's good to be denounced... the opposition may have a point, however, only in that you might need to reign it in a little. just a little, b/c you're 99.9% on point - with your column, It Gets Better, your political statements on national TV - everything. so - ok, lesson learned.

the way to conquer the recent snafu, perhaps, is to capitalize on it? like, hey, it's pretty hard to be tolerant toward a political group that wishes to enact institutional means to make sure you're nonexistent; the frustration came out, etc.... who doesn't understand that, except for the radicals who don't understand it today? i hope you're able to get out there and in front of it, because you are such a clear, articulate, powerful force!!!

My favorite comment was the one who suggested "Dan may be out but isn't comfortable in his own skin." I don't think I know anyone (not that I know Dan Savage, but yanno what I mean) who is MORE comfortable with themselves and has helped me through his column become comfortable with myself.

Christ, you can smell the repression and jealousy disguised as outrage right off the computer screen when you read those comments. "How come he gets to live his life and be happy fucking men and I can't, WAAAAHHH."

Ooh, a very confused and obviously female republican's comment for the win/utter lose:

"Savage is another left-wing democrat with rape fantasies. Maybe he will run for Wu's seat in Oregon. Why are democrat so hatefilled and angry at women? Why do they dehumanize and abuse women? Don't they realize some lunatic might copy their violent rhetoric and rape or torture a woman? The democrats are setting up a dangerous situation where innocent young women might be attacked."

Make Dan stop attacking young women!!!

Gosh, I thought I was going to be first to observe the tenor of those Politico commenters. I'm late to every party!

It's something though, ain't it? Politics (partly) aside, I'm always amazed that frank discussions of sexuality - hell, just the use of the word "fuck" as a regular, transitive verb - equals "violence" and "filth" to these people.

What made them like that? Where do all these sex-phobic freaks come from? What traumatic things happened to them as children? And please, God, tell me I'm not doing the same things to my own without meaning to.

As Anita O'Day once said, "Got the name? Might as well play the game!" You are in better shape right now than Rachel Maddow, Mr Savage. It would be a kindness for you to direct your energies right now towards entrenching Klayman & his heavy metal anti-gay christer client in national infamy.

Lewd and anti-Christian, sure, but "violent" is just inaccurate. Aside from a few offhand comments that weren't meant literally and that only a person willfully seeking evidence of evilness would seize upon, I haven't seen any violent rhetoric from you. And I've been reading you a long time.

The 'Christians are victims' and 'Leftists are hateful and mean' angles were seriously at play on the Politico comments thread.

Be proud, Dan.

Over on MSNBC, Rachel Maddow occasionally takes time to show the latest Republican exploitation of her name. Some of these people can't even pronounce it correctly. But she is proud to be a demon raised for GOP fundraising purposes.

After all, of course they have better things to do than fret over Dan Savage or the "cross-dressing lesbian". Well, objectively, though our perception of the objective might be a little bit subjective. Meanwhile, they're worried enough that they might lose on some issues that they need scarecrows to rally up the bucks. You're it this week.

Be proud.

I hope the GOP continues to make Dan a poster child of our societal "decline". What better way than to point to a loving, committed family man? Great approach if the end-game is to convince middle-America that being LBGT and being an upright member of society with a family often coincide without the sky falling or anything.

"A political denunciation? How very Maoist of them."

THAT made my day. Thanks, sloegin! :-)

Dan, it's interesting to see how the best thing the GOP can do is co-opt what originally was liberal language ('bigotry', 'prejudice', 'oppression', 'intolerance', 'sexism', etc.) to denounce those who they don't like, without arguing the points. There is something hopeful in that: they understand now that these things are indeed evils (when you think of the rhetorics of anti-Black conservatives in the '50s and '60s, you can see that this was not yet universally accepted).

There has been some progress, when the conservative's new way of claiming someone is bad is by using the kind of language only liberals would be using a while ago. It means they see that it works -- that people do care about individual rights and disenfranchised groups. And the fact that it does work is indeed a form of progress.

All in all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Don't worry Dan, the Democrats folded and are slashing spending in order to stop the Republicans from forcing USA to default on its debt. Crisis averted, at least until the next time the Republicans throw a tantrum in order to get whatever insane pro-serfdom/anti-woman/Christianist/anti-gay/anti-immigrant/anti-brown-people/etc. policy they want ("We won't raise the debt ceiling unless you pass a DOMA amendment to the US Constitution"? Seriously, if the Democrats' capacity for appeasement of the Republicans is unbounded, why shouldn't the Republicans demand all kinds of crazy shit?)
