Pow Wow This Weekend

Posted by on Fri, Jul 15, 2011 at 2:38 PM

Tomorrow at 10 am, the annual United Indians of All Tribes Pow Wow starts at Discovery Park. People come from all over the world for the dances, competitions, fry bread, Indian tacos, and serious Indianness. For a sample, check this video made by Kelly O and Pearl Dragon from Champagne Champagne:

Tomorrow at 2 pm, Mayor McGinn will lead a ceremony to rename the road that runs through the Park after Bernie Whitebear who, until his death in 2000, was considered the unofficial parent to "every Indian kid in Seattle."

So am I right to assume that the best way white people can honor the attendees is by staying away?

@4 - everyone has always been kind to me, and I'm the lily whitest white that ever whited...

you can't act like an asshole jerk (or drink booze) but neither of those has ever seemed necessary anyway

Be sure to check out the vendors. There are some really fantastic artists that have booths there.

PNW Native gatherings are THE BEST. The Pow Wows in SoCal are not nearly as fun or community-based. If you can - go to this!

This is fantastic, I'm glad the NW Coast people sang in their language. So many languages have been lost. I think a Native American language should be taught in our schools, a local tribes language. But I also want a pony on my birthday too...

Awe, my name's Bernie too.

I'm glade of this post as you have reminded me of the Seafair Pow Wow in Discovery Park this weekend as last year I forgot when it was and missed out. My Yup'ik stepmother will be disappointed that she can't go.
