PopCap Sells to EA

Posted by on Tue, Jul 12, 2011 at 1:49 PM

The rumor turned out to be true: According to TechCrunch, EA has bought Seattle gaming company PopCap.

As we initially reported a few weeks ago, EA has acquired PopCap Games. The acquisition price is $650 million plus $100 million stock and a multi-year earn-out. The total acquisition price is as much as $1.3 billion.

If you know anyone who works at PopCap, they're buying drinks tonight.

Yay! EA gets to put their label on more shit! Maybe we'll start needing to sign into EA accounts if we want to play (formerly) Popcap games. This is going to lead to lots of exciting new opportunities for consumers in the areas of marketing experience and corporate bullshit navigation.

And every customer of PopCap mourns. EA will raise prices and lower quality, with the added bonus of no customer service! Shit, I liked my games - and EA sucks.

I'm sure there'll be some pretense of "independence" too. Maxis was supposed to have that too.

I am so disgusted with this merger as well everything EA touches goes to crap. Ever since 2002 they bought out Westwood and killed Earth and Beyond I have hated this company. Now that they have there mitts in KOTOR theres already talk before X-mas about management within the game being a problem.
