Kemper Freeman, Bellevue's notorious anti-transit developer, has tossed another half million dollars—bringing his total contrition to over $1 million—toward Tim Eyman's latest initiative to undermine regional tolling and block light-rail from crossing the I-90 bridge.
Says Eyman in an email sent this afternoon:
Through June 30th, we've raised a total of $1,273,127 with Kemper Freeman contributing $1,093,000 (the other $180,127 came from 1720 other donations). We used Citizen Solutions of Federal Way for the 9th year to handle our paid signature drive and paid them $1,008,000 — as usual, they supplemented our thousands of supporters' volunteer signature gathering.
According to the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission, which has not recorded this latest contribution online, Freeman had given $525,000 as of May 19.
As Goldy reported, Initiative 1125 would bar "not just the use, but the 'transfer' of gas-tax-funded lanes for non-highway purposes," thereby blocking "Sound Transit's access to the I-90 bridge, thus killing its plans to connect Seattle and the Eastside via light rail."
Freeman's statement after the jump:
I have been a big supporter of Tim's initiatives for the past 14 years. I think they've done a great job of holding Olympia accountable for our tax dollars. But I-1125's policies and principles really struck a chord with me because of my sincere belief that improving our transportation infrastructure is vitally important. Our state's economy will never reach its full potential unless we strengthen our transportation infrastructure and I firmly believe I-1125's policies are critical to making that happen. Citizens are rightly suspicious of tolls because of a valid concern that Olympia will raid such revenues during "emergencies." That's why I-1125's policies requiring accountability and transparency are so necessary. Tolls aren't taxes and I-1125 keeps it that way. I'm firmly committed to helping the campaign get its message out to the voters over the next few months. I welcome the debate over I-1125 and feel very comfortable letting the voters decide. I urge everyone to vote for I-1125 in November.
