The Week of Book-Making Continues

Yesterday, Matthew Stadler read from his book Chloe Jarren's La Cucaracha at the Sorrento Hotel. Tonight, he continues his weeklong residency at the Henry Art Gallery by giving a lecture titled “What Good Are Bookstores?” Stadler is the brains behind Portland-based publisher Publication Studio, and he's spent a lot of time thinking and talking about the life cycle of books. His views on bookstores have evolved over the last year or so, and I'm interested in hearing what he has to say about where they've going and what they should be doing. The lecture starts at 7 and it's free.

And! This Sunday, Publication Studio will be hosting a "Rebind Event" at the Henry, in which they will take your crumbling old well-loved paperback books and rebind them "into a sturdy new volume in standard manila folder covers." It'll cost seven bucks a book, and it should be fun to watch.

More information about both these events can be found in our readings calendar.

FYI, my "week-long residency" is still actually Patricia No's and David Knowles's five-day residency at the Henry Art Gallery (through Sunday, July 10), and I'm still just here for last night's Sorrento event (thank you Michael Hebb, One Pot, and Vladimir Verano, Third Place Press) and tonight's talk at the Henry (thank you Jayme Yen for creating the whole summer of "Shelf Life" that brought me, Patricia, and David to Seattle).
