Michele Bachmann Compares Herself to John Wayne Gacy

Posted by on Mon, Jun 27, 2011 at 11:48 AM

Well, it sure didn't take long for Bachmann to make her first serious campaign error: Oliver Willis says:

In the video below, Bachmann compares her spirit to that of John Wayne, who she says is from Waterloo, IA. Except the John Wayne from Waterloo is not the legendary actor but instead the notorious serial killer. Whoops.

She's going to mimic the "spirit" of someone who raped and murdered 33 teenage boys. Let's see how long it takes for her followers to back her up on this.

Leaving aside the asininity of her mistake, what the hell did she mean by comparing herself to "the spirit of John Wayne" in the first place (even if she'd gotten Marion Morrison's birthplace right)? She's all show?

I hope Sufjan Stevens lets her use his JWG song for her campaign.
"And in my best behavior
I am really just like him
Look beneath the floor boards
For the secrets I have hid"

John Wayne the actor portrayed notorious serial killers of Native Americans in many of his films. Um, that's what she meant, right?

Imagine Michele Bachmann in clown make-up like Gacy.

Sorry, I just had that image in my mind and hoped that, by sharing it, I might flush it out. Because if I don't, I might never sleep again.

Wikipedia says Marion Robert/Mitchell Morrison (the actor, John Wayne) was born in Winterset, Iowa. Hey, Winterset, Waterloo, they both start with "W," right? And at least this time she had the right state, right?. (Sheesh. If we lowered the bar any more, we'd have to dig a trench for it.)

What a maroon! I hope her luck starting a campaign in a place named Waterloo is no better than Napoleon's was.

A silly mistake. But to blow it up more than that, like you did Paul, is pretty silly too.

@9 If that was her only mistake then it would not be a big deal but at this point it really helps framing the whole picture.

I hate Michele Bachmann just as much as the next guy but...

John Wayne Gacy was born on March 17, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, the only son and the second of three children born of John Stanley Gacy (June 20, 1900 – December 25, 1969),...

@10, "from" is not the same thing as "born in". Gacy did in fact live in Waterloo and committed his first crimes there (though not murders), and was sent to prison for the first time from there.

Rolling Stone has a very interesting piece on her at the moment. This woman is clearly insane or at the very least, extremely delusional.

Believe me, I’m one for enjoying her goofy gaffes, but don’t expect me to make hay out chicken feed when there is bound to be plenty of manure coming down the pike.

Dems will do anything for opposition research. Here is a case where Michele Bachmann was born in Waterloo. John "The Duke" Wayne's parents lived in Waterloo but had moved before the Duke was born. It is easy to postulate that some pride of place led to a story that John Wayne was born in Waterloo and this story could have been part of provincial lore.

Only Weiner-loving perverts would use Gacy's birth place in association with Rep. Bachmann.

@27 Since, as was pointed out above, Gacy's birthplace was Chicago, your final comment doesn't really apply.

But if you mean those making hay out of Gacy being "from" Waterloo (in the sense that he lived there at one point), and since Michelle Bachmann was born in Waterloo, it seems natural to me that one would associate Bachmann with one of the cities that Gacy lived in. You can't mention her birth place without doing so! (BTW, you can't talk about my home town without talking about a town associated with Arthur Shawcross.)

Perhaps a complete thought before posting next time would allow you to make a point without it coming out as an illogical jumble of words.

@27- So your point is Michelle Bachmann is proud of a complete fiction that a quick visit to Wikipedia would have cleared up for her?

Way to clear her name, bro.
