Do I have to come right flat out and tell you everything? Gimme some money. - Spinal Tap
  • "Do I have to come right flat out and tell you everything? Gimme some money." - Spinal Tap

New York City resident Chris Coon has taken handling pans to a new level: He's created a "social experiment" to ask "literally" a million people for free money. Aside from just declaring that begging is a job, Coon plans to record all of the details of his experiment. He'll document how much money he gets each day, along with gender, age and racial donor statistics. Oh, and he'll document these statistics on his website, with his laptop.

The New York Times City Room blog and the Village Voice have already picked up on Coon's story, which is certain to bloat his PayPal account significantly. His own website offers plenty of information with nary a picture of Coon smiling, because hard work is no joke. Here are the monetary amounts needed to help get his family back together. Here are some ways the money is currently being spent.

Believe you me, homelessness is no laughing matter. In a way, wasn't Colton Harris-Moore socially experimenting? God speed, you wack emperors!

He has a fully punchable face in most of those photos.

At least the iamfacingforclosure guy gave us some amusement ( http://www.caseypedia.com/wiki/Main_Page ) with the grift.

This guy just seems unpleasant, he doesn't *seem* to have the same sorts of problems with addiction and mental illness that keep the people i give change to on the streets from finding work.

It's not even a very good "experiment."

Sigh. There are WAAAAAAAY too many factors that are not being taken into account to make this even a remotely useful social/scientific experiment. If this man wants to do this more power to him - but don't try to pass it off as anything more than what it is: one man's attempt to get money. Which is acceptable all on it's own. It just makes him seem skeevy or snake-oil-salesman-like to tack this media-whore bullshit explanation onto it.

Oh, my opinion is somewhat changed- "I was in a foster family til I was 12 years old and I caused some havoc and went to training school and detention for kids from that point on my life has been a series of group homes and jails and detention centers and homelessness"

Buttttttt why, instead of being homeless doesn't he move back to where he's got a support base?

"Even though his family lives in the D.C. metropolitan area, he refuses to move down there permanently because he feels that New York is more conducive to the money-making side of the operation."

I'm right back to the opinion that he should get fucked.

Just cause some young white guy can do it doesn't mean anything about homelessness. He'll probably attract a good 20-40k in donations just cause the story is out there, tourists who'll think "hey, it's the professional beggar guy" as if he were a naked cowboy or something.

I am Chris Coon and yes I have a laptop that a young lady bought for me to do this experiment and I dont mean mug anyone... You can all have the opinion that you do and that is fine but What I do is harder than what most people do as a job. and On the note the paper did not explain that I have no support in DC. My daughter and her mother were staying in my daughters grandmas house and I would be on the streets there also. You only know the little that was explained from what was written here if You met me you would probably give or maybe not but you would have a different outlook on me as a person

all of u are right about this guy,end of story, life is a struggle, its not fair that people have to work hard,at a real job and this man is workin hard, jus by askin people for money,b a real man and go out and provide for ur child,is this how u want them to view life,o its ok to beg, thats jus sad and the people that follow u,need to b ashamed of themselves, they have nothing better to do,but anyway, keep makin excuses for urself, god only helps those who helps themselves and that hearts is good, but ur none of those things,we all can c that,we dont need to get to know u as a person,ur actions is the proof in the pudding,u talk about how u need this and that, but u post how much u make and wat u spending, but yet ur not spending it on anything that u should b or that u say u need, like they said, this is jus another way of panhandling just made easy.

@9: This quote explains a lot- “Even though his family lives in the D.C. metropolitan area, he refuses to move down there permanently because he feels that New York is more conducive to the money-making side of the operation.”
