Break In at Richard Hugo House, Suspects Arrested

Posted by on Thu, Jun 23, 2011 at 12:05 PM

If you needed a reason to GiveBig to Richard Hugo House today, employees of the literary non-profit on Capitol Hill discovered shattered glass and a busted door upon arriving at work this morning. The house was broken into and perhaps burglarized during the night.

"It looks like someone took the big ceramic planter we use for cigarette butts and threw it in the glass door a bunch of times," says programming director Brian McGuigan. "We're down here vacuuming, picking up broken glass, and dealing with police, insurance, and door repair people."

The last time the nonprofit was broken into, suspects smeared shit throughout the house. "This is less of a mess to clean up but it's still pretty demoralizing," McGuigan says.

Last night's break-in occurred at 2:00 a.m., triggering the non-profit's security system, which alerted police. A suspect or suspects were reportedly arrested. But at this point, it's unclear if anything was taken from Hugo House. "We're taking a close look at everything now," says McGuigan. "We have a glass vase with about $30 in cash donations that wasn't touched, so that's a good sign. If you're breaking into a nonprofit, you're probably desperate for cash."

Remember, any donation you make to Hugo House today is matched, percentage-wise, by a pack of wealthy donors. "We could use the support," says McGuigan.
