Quote of the Week: Republican State Senator Roy McDonald on Voting for Gay Marriage

Posted by on Fri, Jun 17, 2011 at 12:44 PM

An unidentified Slog tipper sent this along. Here's Republican New York State Senator Roy McDonald:

"You get to the point where you evolve in your life where everything isn't black and white, good and bad, and you try to do the right thing."

"You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, fuck it, I don't care what you think. I'm trying to do the right thing."

"I'm tired of Republican-Democrat politics. They can take the job and shove it. I come from a blue-collar background. I'm trying to do the right thing, and that's where I'm going with this."

Holy shit. This is the best thing a politician has said in ages. And be sure to vote in the TMZ poll, which right now says 85% of respondents believe McDonald did the right thing.

Such great news - thank you! And I thought, what the....TMZ? Then I remembered it was founded by the gay lawyer who did the commentary for People's Court. Good for him highlighting something wonderful like this now and then.

It's a nice quote IF he plans on voting FOR marriage equality. The quote alone does not make that at all clear -- nor does Paul's post.

I have a feeling he might be fucked, politically.

But fuck that. Today, he is a raw badass.

I sure wish Obama could say "Fuck it" and do the right thing... Ha! Like that will ever happen.

I think he covered that with: "They can take the job and shove it".

Wow... It's gotta feel great to do something like that!

Politicians make much better politicians when they're not being politicians. This guy rocks.

"The right thing" is Marriage Equality (legalizing gay marriage).

Equality has been a conservative principle since before the first Republican President freed the slaves in defiance of the Democratic opposition.

@2: I'm Rip van Winkle when it comes to television. I thought you meant Doug Llewelyn instead of Harvey Levin.

@11- That's why the Republican embrace of anti-equality in the 70s to capture southern voters in the aftermath of Democratic support of the Civil Rights movement was all the more cynical and terrible.

#4 I am glad he is on our side on this one but your logic makes no sense. If standing up for what he thinks is right is a good thing then that applies no matter which side he is on.

That being said, YESSSSSSS! Another one for us!

@12, Doug Llewelyn! His early hair was 100% Ken doll, wasn't it?

So I guess that bumps the liberal war count upto 5 vs 3, and the liberal body count upto 1.2 million vs 6,000? Right?

>implying that body count from wars occurring under someone's watch is a valid metric of their political philosophy's aggression
>implying that Lincoln started or was responsible for the Civil War

@18, I had to google up some pix when I realized my recollection was almost entirely about his cute little smirk and not what sat above it. You're right--weird how we gradually normalize/modernize in our memories the distinctive looks of the past. I'd put his overall appearance as love-child of early Jim Bakker and Tom Brokaw. There's a mental image for you!

Wars don't just "occur". They are all elective.

Lincoln could have allowed the south to secede. He elected not to. FDR elected to respond to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour (a pacifist might not have). Bush elected to respond to 9-11.

And body count may not be a valid measure of someones political philosophy's aggression, but it certainly is a valid measure of that political philosophy's actual results (or at least the results of that persons application of his political philosophy).

@22:
>mfw YGBKM deems defending oneself aggression.
By the way, Bush responding to 9/11 by attacking Afghanistan was justifiable, if horribly botched. Bush responding to 9/11 by attacking Iraq would be like Lincoln responding to the attack on Fort Sumter by attacking Mexico, or FDR responding to Pearl Harbor by attacking Thailand.
I won't even respond too your last paragraph other than to label it laughably inaccurate.
