Columns make the average rambler grand, I guess.
The only thing missing is a peeing kid fountain.

A HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH!

I'd love to get a look at the inside. I wonder if they're Russian.

It looks like you'd be swept over by an avalanche of coke as soon as you opened the front door.

@3, look closer. If it's not a pissing cherub it's an Indian maiden with a water jug. And flanking the entry (porte-cochère?) are plaster lions (or Labradors--it's hard to tell).

I love it when you liberals make fun of the working classes and their tastes and culture; it makes getting their votes so much easier. Keep up the work.

@15 As a HARD RADICAL [I love when people use these words] leftist, I agree. Maybe Charles is pointing out the absurdity of consumer fetishism of kitsch but people on the left should learn a thing or two about the following: don't be a fucking dick. Might help your cause if you stop pointing out the petty faults of others every 5 minutes.

Chuck, you're killing me with these abortions.

this is very likely the work of flippers who "architected" the remodel themselves, THEN maybe some persians or russians or chinese moved in (the corvette makes the latter unlikely). the real estate crash had 1 positive effect: it saved the planet from more and more of this shit.

@15

I make fun of these kinds of houses all the time because they are ugly and stupid. Yet the people who inhabit them likely make a lot more money than me. In fact, I am almost assuredly a lot more working class than they are. Or does working class now apply only to those who don't have a college education, regardless of income and how much working class work they do?

Charles should post a picture of his house so we can make fun of his bad taste as well.

Is the house stupid looking and perhaps a bit gaudy? Yeah. But who gives a shit?

Eh, I've seen gaudier houses in other neighborhoods. As if Ballard is some bastion of architectural perfection. That house to the left is just as terrible in its own way.

Definitely the house of immigrants. They found out the hard way the streets weren't paved w/gold here, so they settled for this.

Walked by there many times...2039 NW 95th St. according to street view. Nowhere near sunset hill incidentally, Chuck's Ballard geography sucks. it's crown hill/north beach.

@18 "Or does working class now apply only to those who don't have a college education, regardless of income and how much working class work they do?"

You really don't understand how class works do you? You're so wonderfully naive.

But please, make fun of Nascar, country music, small town America, blue collar culture. Call working class Americans fat, ignorant, lazy, uncouth and uncultured. Wave your arugula, lattes and college degrees in their faces and then wonder why they vote against their interests.

It only helps those of us who need their votes to keep our taxes low.

The sad thing about the moniker 'working class' and other terms that get bandied about so freely is that it reminds me of just how much the media and politicians have succeeded in pitting all of us against each other. We are all the working class, we are now mostly also the working poor. Somehow 'they' have conspired to pit us against each other instead of pitting ourselves against 'them'.

On a lighter note, these people are probably in debt up past their eyeballs and had to take out a mortgage to buy that last lion statue.

@20, it's not the gaudiness we're making fun of. It's the gaudiness tacked onto such a modest house in such a superficial manner. There are indeed far more offensive houses all over the East Side -- probably 3/4 of the houses built in Bellevue/Kirkland/Redmond/Mercer Island in the past twenty years. There are some done in just this style only twenty or thirty times larger.

"Somehow 'they' have conspired to pit us against each other instead of pitting ourselves against 'them'. "

Ahhh, so now it's someone else's fault you make fun of the cultural habits of the lower classes.

So enjoy your $5 heirloom, organic farmer's market tomatoes and $3 artisan croissants and PLEASE, PLEASE continue make fun of the Walmart crowd. Like you, I distain them but unlike you, apparently, I need their votes to keep my taxes low.

Thanks, @22. I was able to track them down from that. County records show a massage therapist bought it in 2003 from the couple who city DPD records show permitted that second story addition and portico in 2001.

A couple named Zoya and Yeirkhay. Fnarf, how do you do it?

Is it any wonder your attempts to explain to lower class Americans that their use of classical architectural forms on a comtemporary modern structure fail to even reach the level of kitsch or pastiche, let alone post-modernism critique. Is it any wonder they vote against liberals. Look! Homo!

Russian massage therapist? Incredibly low class. No doubt they'll vote against any state income tax after all you liberals made fun of their tastes. Thanks! Keep up the work for us.

@27, I have mad home-decorating-trend spotting skills.

Russians are particularly well known for their, shall we say, exuberant tastes in design and decor. Portico + Palladian window + statuary + Corvette, man, they might as well put a samovar on the roof.

Heh, the Eastside is exactly what I had in mind, Fnarf. There's a couple real gems in the backwoods of Kenmore/Bothell that you just gotta see. I too assume they belong to expatriates of the former Eastern Bloc.
