Gregoire Signs Bill to Help Low Income Women Access Free Birth Control

Posted by on Wed, Jun 15, 2011 at 4:52 PM

Speaking of signing things, today Governor Gregoire signed a bill to extend Washington’s Medicaid family planning program, Take Charge, which will now provide free birth control and other services to as many as 12,000 additional women living in Washington State. The bill will also save the state at least $3.85 million in unintended pregnancy costs during this biennium.

Hurrah for good news! Bad news after the jump.

From a Planned Parenthood press release sent this afternoon:

Unfortunately, the savings generated by the increase in access to family planning services through SB 5912 will be undermined by a $2.25 million cut to Department of Health family planning funds in the final 2011-2013 biennial budget. At the same time that the legislature is acknowledging the savings generated by family planning services with SB 5912, they are making a cut to the same kinds of funds in another area. The Department of Health family planning funding cut is expected to end access to family planning services for 7,500 Washingtonians, most of whom are even lower income than the individuals addressed by SB 5912. All the unintended pregnancies that result from the Department of Health family planning cut are anticipated to be Medicaid-paid.

“At a time when the federal government and states around the country have launched a war on basic preventative reproductive health care for women, we are proud that Washington State has been a leader in standing up for women’s health and the proven savings generated by access to birth control with SB 5912. We look forward to working with legislators in the future to gain the full savings our state could achieve by undoing the cut to Department of Health family planning funding,” said Jennifer Allen, Director of Public Policy for Planned Parenthood Votes Washington.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

We need to fix this! This is ridiculous! Our population has increased too quickly to be supported by our crappy system of funding our state. We need real, grown-up state taxes! My family has lived in this state for five generations (mother's side legally came up from Mexico, father's side has been here for a long time in Eastern Washington), my great grandmother comments on how quickly our state has changed in the last 20 years. We need a funding structure that supports rather then hinder this growth. We also need to get our illegal immigrant policies, procedures and hand-outs in check.

Just for the record: I hate the growth. I hate that I won't be able to afford a house where my family has always lived and I hate seeing places I cherished destroyed, I hate seeing the homes and storefronts of my relatives torn down for McMansions and condos because they can no longer afford to be where they've lived for decades. I hate the assholes that think living here for five years gives them the right to bitch about growth. I hate the greenery and forests that make Washington so desirable to the assholes who live in torn-up states being torn-up so that these assholes can live here.

I am totally starting my period tomorrow.

But wait, I thought procreation was a critical thing that requires the state to keep you fags from getting married so we can be sure there's plenty of procreation? If procreation is so important then why is the state providing birth control?

ahhhh, I think I get it. Procreation of upper class straight white folks is important. Sorry, for a second there I thought they actually gave a shit about people. My mistake.

@2 - I know exactly what you mean. And I occasionally have the same flip-out over our lack of a sensible revenue generation model in this state. Not to mention the fucking growth.
