The Tacoma Hempfest

Posted by on Fri, Jun 10, 2011 at 5:34 PM

It's not like that other Hempfest—where people smoke pot. From the mail bag:

Tacoma Hempfest is scheduled June 25 at Wright Park. We are significantly different from Seattle Hempfest as we are a family friendly, free speech event, that emphasizes the ubiquitous nature of cannabis throughout society. As a non-smoking event, we of course choose to deemphasize the “4:20 Toke-fest” label choosing instead last year to make a plea for a moratorium of specious prosecution. This year we will emphasize a peace on the war on drugs moment choosing to be mindful of the cost and collateral damage in the war on drugs.

There will also be a ban on punctuation.

It sounds like a pretty lame party, but I agree with them about the goddamn hippie stoner 420 day-glo-and-dreadlocks bullshit doing a lot more harm than good when it comes to normalizing pot. Pot paraphernalia and culture are ludicrous, and reinforcing Cheech and Chong stereotypes really doesn't serve anyone.

So, the Tacoma Hempfest will replace the smoking with irony.

And yeah why's with all those hippe stoners at a pot reform / music / cannabis culture festival? And while we're on the topic of fringe community members making life uncomfortable for good old middle class moderates, what's with all the drag queens and bare skin and kissing and stuff at gay pride festivals? Don't they know they're doing a lot more harm when it comes to normalizing their sexuality?

Pacifying the resistance movement is cute. When injustice becomes law REBELLION BECOMES DUTY. There's a level of respect, so obviously don't go pushing buttons, but to have a hempfest where your only goal is to be different than the Seattle one in that people aren't smoking the ganja? Why even call it hempfest? Call it, We just wanted to bring the pro-marijuana crowd for their money and then criticize them for their personal decisions festival. If they think this is going to get the cops and/or city off their back they are sorely mistaken. The cops are going to crawl that place for revenue just like they do Seattle's hempfest. Only in Tacoma, it's likely that the cops will be needed elsewhere because of a shooting. Someone's getting tons of overtime~~~

@4, I'm sorry, but not washing your goddamn dreads is a lifestyle choice.

So are conservatively-dressed-non-dreadlocked-job-holding-family-responsibility-taking people NOT allowed to criticize the stupidity and wastefulness of the War on Drugs? Guess I'll be quiet then.

tell ya what. you cover the fees for the off duty police security we HAVE TO HAVE in order for the permits to be issues, and we'll smoke all the pot you can bring. We are merely trying to break OUT of the stoner stereotype. how about you come see what we're about before guessing? the Seattle Hempfest Founder Vivian McPeak was kind enough to join us onstage last year, and we get along just fine with all those folks.
Come join the movement, instead of poking sticks at us, and you might find that Tacoma is a lot more fun than you think. Isn't it at least worth checking out a family friendly event and seeing what that might be like? i'm sure folks with families will. there's a new sprayground and playground at Wright Park this year for the kids, we are one of the only Hempfests in the country you can bring a dog to, and we do our best to educate folks about Cannabis as a focus of our event.
i am pretty proud of our progress, and the zero arrests we had for our first year. help us continue that tradition, and maybe give us a slightly more fair comment next time you write us up.

Seattle has grown out of the education focus though, we are trying to bring that back..

we have enough of a fight with the non-cannabis consuming populace. i didn't expect that to be coming from the Stranger.. hope we can change that sooner than later Dominic.. We've tried to reach out to your magazine..

Mad props to Madcap! I went to last year’s Hemp fest, oops I mean Non-Hemp fest and it sucked, but I thought that the next year would be better cause ya know they had to play safe to play nice to be allowed more leeway for the next year. Boy was I wrong!!! I say if pot smokers have to hide their faces in shame at a Hemp Festival well.....
Hey, maybe I just misunderstood, maybe Tacoma's hemp fest is more a celebration of those in favor the legal use of high fiber products and stronger rope, if so, my bad. Way to have a dance with no dancing allowed! Yeah, way to go Footloose!
Oh and this is to TVDINNER, NO HIPIES ALOUD! WE RILLY MEAN IT! Should we include illiterates as well? I think you meant to say NO HIPPIES ALLOWED! WE REALLY MEAN IT! At Least learn to use spell check before you go passing judgment on others. K.
PIECE OUT, I mean PEACE OUT
