Today in Disappointing Celebrity News

Posted by on Thu, Jun 9, 2011 at 10:01 AM

Tracy Morgan can apparently transform into a totally homophobic asshole. Even worse, it's apparently the opposite of funny when he does it.

Here's the account of eyewitness Kevin Rogers, who, as Truth Wins Out reports, "describes how Morgan’s entire demeanor changed as he allegedly claimed that being gay is a choice, that homosexuality is something that kids learn from the media, and that gay youth victims of bullying are simply “whining.” Furthermore, he allegedly said that if his son was gay and “whined” about being a bullying victim, he would kill him, using words that will not be repeated here. Morgan is also said to have called upon President Obama to “man up” and stop speaking out for LGBT kids."

Read the whole depressing thing here, and follow Truth Wins Out's campaign to get Tracy Morgan (and Tina Fey) to address the accusations here.

What do you expect from a guy who hangs out with Sarah Palin all the time?

Yeah, there's a real problem with the Black vs. Gay thing. For example, I recently watched "Elephant in the Room", Patrice O'Neils stand up DVD (http://jabailo.tumblr.com/post/631260751… ) and while I found it uproarious he did use the word "faggot" inappropriately (in my view).

My take on it is that many blacks equate homosexuality with domination ( you will be my bitch, etc. ) and hence it's not simply a "lifestyle" for them, but a political statement which their own status in the world must reject emphatically.

I find this totally unsurprising. His "humor" is lost on me as I've never been able to see past the nasty, self-serving macho-ey asshole he clearly is.

5: Never a fan of his stand-up, but his work on '30 Rock' can be dazzlingly hilarious.

Ah, Tracy Morgan. Affirmative action celebrity whose career is premised on assuaging paternalistic liberal white guilt. And though Patrice ONeil is likely homophobic, I highly doubt to this extent...because he's not retarded (morgan is), and is genuinely a riot.

I am now sad. I think he's a huge part of what makes 30 Rock awesome but I can't say this surprises me.

Disappointing and not entirely surprising - Tracy Morgan has a few screws loose, which is part of what makes him so funny.

@6, I think Morgan on 30 Rock is maybe the funniest guy who's ever been on American TV. I'll be heartbroken if this is true.

I can't read "the whole depressing thing" because a Facebook login screen is in the way. Is there a non-protected mirror of the content, or a generic guest account set of credentials, or is the content meant for Facebook accountholders only?

Have you seen Donald Glover's bit about Tracy Morgan? It explains so much. "Just talk about penises" if you have to do stand-up.

Don't worry, Chris Rock intervened.

He did this spiel in 2009, too but the bullying tidbit is new.

Had anyone verified this? All of this has come from one guys Facebook page. Anyone else confirm this? That it wasn't a joke? Or are we depending on this guys reading of Tracy Morgan's body language?

I mean, really.

I don't think it would be all that shocking if he proved to be a bigot. He might be clever and talented but in interviews he doesn't sound very sophisticated. Maybe he doesn't have the critical thinking skills to keep him from adopting the nasty prejudices he hears from some other comedians.

In reference to counter protesting the Westborro Baptist Church. Just dont give Tracy Morgan any attention, thats what he wants. Just ignore the problem, put your head in the sand and the problem will go away.

@16 & @18 Google "Tracy Morgan Homophobic" and you'll see that this sort of schtick is nothing new... from my relatively quick Google search, I found complaints about homophobic content of his stand-up from 2009.

(And that makes it all the more likely that Tina fey knew about this behavior for years and has done nothing to address it... which is *really* depressing.)

Yeah, I don't find this surprising. The guy can be sort of funny sometimes, but either he's Andy Kaufman levels of brilliant, or he's legitimately insane.

Was I the only one who thought Tracy Morgan was gay before reading this?

@24 - So is Tina Fey supposed to pre-approve the public utterances of all her employees? Or is she supposed to scuttle her show because some of the key players have unappealing opinions?

I think she's pretty firmly on record as being supportive of gay rights.

@27 Or, you know, she can go on record publicly denouncing his behavior. duh.

What is so depressing is the fact that he's been pulling this crap for two years and she's kept her mouth shut the entire time. An ally who is too spineless to stand up against homophobia might as well be condoning it.

@4, I've also seen Elephant in the Room and I don't believe Patrice used "faggot" with any intentional malice. It may be problematic in the same way that Joakim Noah and Kobe's usages were problematic, but it's not on the hateful level of Tracy Morgan's comments, if they're accurate.

While it's true that this is completely lame on Morgan's part, it's also true that comedy is filled with a lot of very fucked up people. If Fey fired everyone on the show with really offensive opinions, probably the only ones left would be her and that nice young man Kenneth.

@24 & 28

Tina Fey always has been vocally supportive of gay rights. I remember watching her accept an Emmy for 30 Rock and thanking "all the wives, husbands, and gay partners of all our writers". Nobody demanded that she denounce child abuse when Alec Baldwin's threatening tirade against his daughter was leaked. But if you're calling for Tina Fey to step forward and further clarify her feelings about gay people, you should probably expect the same thing of Lorne Michaels, who launched Tracy Morgan's career and is 30 Rock's executive producer.
