Don't Run, Alec!

Posted by on Wed, Jun 8, 2011 at 12:40 PM

Breitbart's Big Hollywood reports that Alec Baldwin is thinking about running for mayor of New York City:

The “30 Rock” star, who has long talked about running for political office, believes Weinergate has shaken up the field of candidates enough that he might have a chance to win, a friend of the actor told The Daily.
“Alec said, ‘Hey, maybe this changes the race. The dynamics have shifted,’ ” said Baldwin’s pal.
“The Democrats need a high-profile candidate, and Alec can fill that bill.”

Please don't run for mayor, Alec Baldwin. Let's leave this whole celebrities-turned-politicians shtick to the Republicans. In the big picture, Democrats are doing a pretty good job being the adults of the political world. An unserious high-profile candidate—especially a beloved actor with a few horrendous mistakes in his past—would make the entire party look bad.

I don't know. I like Alec Baldwin. I have had a few interactions with him and he has always been a good guy. If I like his policies and if I think he can get the job done then i would vote for him. But he's totally not running, doy.

Jesse Ventura was and is a joke. He was a terrible governor.

You know, parents of all stripes occasionally need to be forgiven ridiculous outbursts at their children. I'm certain much worse has been said by many of Baldwin's critics, just not released for public consumption.

That said, there is no excusing The Marrying Man.

Al Franken is a decent guy, and sincere. Alec's certainly smart and capable, but unless he embraces his assholishness and uses it to crush Republicans, I don't think that'll work. They're both smart, and they're both actors, but I don't see them as comparable. Franken crushes Republicans with wit alone, I don't see Alec being capable of sidestepping his emotion enough to prove successful.

He shouldn't run unless he wants his opponents to license You are Worthless Alec Baldwin and play it forever in their ads.

Paul Constant is the typical Democrat Party Klingon: my party, right or wrong, Seig Heil! The Democrats don't need a "high profile candidate." They need better politics and they need to stop acting like progressives when they run and governing like Republicans when they win. The only folks looking to the Democrats for hope are party hacks like Constant. The smartest voters are the ones who say "Fuck both parties. I'm staying home on Election Day."

According to a friend who went to high school with them, all the Baldwin's are stupid pricks.

Perhaps Alec is the best of the lot, but he's still just a no-talent clown. And a step below Shatner on the clown-scale to boot.

Let's not be naive - 75% of politics is acting.

Baldwin is smart, charismatic, funny, well spoken, and liberal to the core. He'll draw in female voters. He should go for it. If he's not up to it, that will become clear during the campaign.

That isn't even close to being the worst thing he's done.
