Politico:

Mitt Romney ridiculed President Barack Obama for his "awfully European" economic policies at a town hall Friday morning, using the May unemployment report to beat up on the White House.

Romney brought up President Obama's "European answers" yesterday during his announcement speech, too. It's clear that he's trying to turn this into a talking point, and an insult, but I'm not exactly sure who he's trying to woo, here. Sure, xenophobic far-right Republicans are terrified of Europe (hell, most of them don't even own passports, except for the northern ones who need them to go get Canadian drugs for cheap) and Romney certainly has to shore up his right-wing base to get the nomination.

But if he keeps banging this Europe drum, he's going to scare away the centrists he's going to need to win in the general election. Hating on Europe just makes him sound like George W. Bush, or a teabagger, or a dumb caricature of a Republican. And it sounds false coming from Romney; you can accuse him of many things, but he's not a hick. And that's a selling point for moderate undecideds, I think—Romney's going to have to come across as cosmopolitan when the big race starts, and this xenophobia angle is unbecoming on him.
